Bob Roberts has kindly sent a gallery of pictures taken by him whilst the build of a customer's roadgoing Ford Zephyr MkII took place at Eurodragster.com sponsor Robinson Race Cars during 2014-17.
This arrived in the RRC workshops already converted to a 2 door with a brief to bring its comfort and performance up to modern standards. Just like many old cars, when work started it became apparent that all was not well under the nice paint job. There was quite a lot of rust and much of the body had to be repaired or replaced. Given a general lack of suitable panels many had to be created from scratch and others taken from a suitable donor car.
Power was provided by a 400 inch Ford Cleveland with ally heads and MSD fuel injection giving around 450hp. This was backed up by a T56 6-speed gearbox connected to the drag racers favourite 9-inch Ford axle. Front struts were uprated with disc brakes and a steering rack with electric assistance on the column. A full stainless exhaust was fitted with electric operated cutouts to allow the engine to breathe freely and noisily.
The bench seat in the front was modified to allow the front passenger side to tilt forward for rear passenger access. Of course the whole interior was retrimmed including a cover strip to hide the roll cage main loop fitted in the b-pillar. Air conditioning by Vintage Air was tucked up behind the dash. Dynamat was used extensively to insulate the interior all the better to hear the top notch sound system. These many changes called for complete new wiring from end to end.
