Smax's long weekend.
28th February: UK Fuel Funny Car racer
Smax Smith has confirmed that he is to take part in the Pro Fuel Shootout during the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod Raceway on 19th-21st April. No real surprise there, you may think, but what no-one suspected was that Smax will be racing in one of Knut Söderquist's Top Fuel Dragsters. Smax is aiming to cross-licence to Top Fuel at the Easter race driving Knut's 'purple' dragster, out of whose cockpit Chris Andrews has had to step for personal reasons.
You are so not copying this without a ©Eurodragster.com
"I can't wait to put in my crossover passes!", says Smax. "And once I've done that all I can say is - watch out competition!".

Smax will have an initiation by fire at the Thunderball, as once he gains his Top Fuel licence he will be pitched straight into the fan-favourite Pro Fuel Shootout, in which the Top Fuel racer waits an extra 0.4 seconds on the Tree whilst the Fuel Funny Car in the other lane gets a head start.

Smax's next date after the Easter Thunderball will be the Excitement Nationals at Shakespeare County Raceway, at which he will be back in the seat of his Mainline Menace Fuel FC for the first round of the British Nitro FC Championship.

Lindelöw does philosophy.
28th February: If you were tuned in on 7th February you will recall that Swedish Top Fuel Dragster racer Pelle Lindelöw has sold his entire operation to the UK's Andy Carter. The sale of the P & G Racing operation has signalled the end of an illustrious thirty years in competition for Pelle and partner Gunnar Elmqvist.

Now that Pelle has had the time to sit and gather his thoughts about the sale, he has written to Eurodragster to express his feelings. In a very philosophical piece, the hugely-popular racer reflects on the past and the future.

"First of all, I really want to say that wish Andy and his team all the best for the coming season. I've talked to the guys on and off at the races, but it's not the same as knowing them. Andy has proven to me his real determination and if that is what counts to win the Championship, the Champ is already crowned.

"Now, I've been around so I know better than that. There are more potential winners, hard-working teams, well-equipped, with years of experience so it will not be easy for anyone. I reckon this season is more uncertain than ever, which in turn means that there are no 'free rides' to the title. You have to be in all the races and perform well to win the series. It's not like in the early days when we had the Wheels Cup in Sweden and Mr Priddle showed up at Mantorp: low qualifier, won the race with a new European record and finished second in the series. Not that he didn't deserve it, but it was maybe a little bit easier those days. OK, he took my second spot, but I was not pissed at all. Maybe in the years after I was a little bit disappointed, but I got over it eventually - Dennis was my Top Fuel hero.

"We are very pleased that we have sold the operation intact because it's a lot easier to follow its progress in the Championship than if it had been split. As I mentioned before, we still consider it kind of ours in a way. What is going to be extremely hard is the fact that for the first time in thirty years we haven't got a race car and nowhere to put the stuff walking around in the pits. Last year, when Peter Lantz rented the operation, things were 'sort of' normal, but now we really will be out in the cold. The only comfort is that we at least know where to get real Swedish coffee next time we are at the Pod. We know who is the new owner of the best coffee machine around, and where the coffee is stored...
©Eurodragster.com
"The plans for the summer - that's one of the differences nowadays: 'summer', not 'season' - is very uncertain. I will try to follow as many rounds as I can of course, beginning at the Main Event and after that go to Pite and the Top Fuel Tour, Mantorp is a matter of course (I've already agreed with Kjell to do some colour commentary there). And then we will most likely go to the European Finals in September. It's a race which seems hard to go without; it is needed as a vitamin injection for the approaching cold period.

"That's the races. Between those we should do as much as possible with the Harleys. There are Hot Rod meetings, Nostalgia races etc. to be visited, and we are about thirty years behind schedule. In the week before the European Finals we will go to the north of the UK to see some of the legendary distilleries of malt fluid that I've heard of. People who have been there and could remember it say that it should be a fantastic experience.

"Once again I will use this fantastic media to express the warm feeling I have from all the kind words from all the friends whom we have come to know over the years. Once a drag racer always a drag racer, even if you are 'carless'. So good luck to all of the racers and see you later."

We are sure that everyone will agree that drag racing will be the worse for Pelle's retirement. The news that the affable Swede will still be a regular fixture at the track is however a great relief, since his departure would leave a gaping hole in the sport.

Calling timing crews.
28th February: Erwin Raets of the European Drag Racing Database has put out a plea to timing crews at European tracks to help him to update his huge databank.
©Eurodragster.com
"I have just finished Santa Pod Raceway's results for 2000 based on the timing files sent by Andy Marrs of TSI Timers", says Erwin. "I have added about 7000 qualifying and some 2600 elimination runs in the past few days. I would like to ask other European timing teams to contact me at erwin@eurodrag.com to see if we can make arrangements to receive race results in a convenient format."

TV Speedfreaks.
28th February: Speedfreaks Ball organiser Martin Hill has been in touch to let us know that the 2002 Speedfreaks Ball is to be featured on UK satellite/cable channel Granada Men and Motors next Monday, 3rd March. The footage of last year's inaugural event is included in Mad Count at 20:00. "This is the second showing, and it will probably be repeated again", says Martin.
©Eurodragster.com
Check out the Granada Men and Motors web site at www.menandmotors.co.uk to keep up to date with listings, as satellite channels are particularly prone to late schedule changes.

Web site updates.
28th February: Holland's Explosion Drag Racing Club have launched a forum at pub49.ezboard.com/bexplosiondragracingforum. "It's the place where races who have questions or problems can ask them, and of course suggestions and complaints can be aired", says Jaap of Explosion. "There's also a For Sale area: check the page on a regular basis! It's been on air since 26th February, join and make it work! The intention is that you log in under your own name, not an alias, so that we know who we are talking to."

Eurodragster's Fifth Birthday Give-Away.
26th February: Today is Eurodragster's fifth birthday. We never imagined when we started in 1998 that Eurodragster would become such a huge site, read by so many around the world. We could never have done it without the help of the racers, clubs, promoters, sponsors, track officials, fellow web sites and fans all around Europe who have given us so much to write about and who have come back in their thousands day after day. A heartfelt Thank You to everyone who has put us where we are today.

To celebrate our birthday, Eurodragster is launching a huge
Give-Away with no less than fifty-two prizes up for grabs - and all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning something is to send us an E-Mail! Discount vouchers, event entry fees, a day crewing on a Top Fuel Bike team, VIP tickets, a day driving a Junior Dragster, die-cast models, event tickets, a socket set, magazine subscription, T-Shirts, signed photographs, videos and a lot more can be won just by dropping us an E-Mail telling us where to send your prize should you win.
©Eurodragster.com
The Give-Away has three sections - Prizes for Racers, Prizes for Kids (up to seventeen) and a Grand Draw - and is open to everyone apart from Sharkman and Tog! Racers and Kids can enter the draw for specific prizes in their sections, but the Grand Draw will be drawn completely at random.

One entry per E-Mail address will be accepted, although entries into the Racers' and Kids' sections will automatically be entered into the Grand Draw as well. Entry closes at 23:59 UK on Wednesday 12th March (00:59 European Thursday 13th March).

We are very grateful indeed to all of the racers, tracks and companies who have donated prizes; they are all credited on the Give-Away page.

To view the list of prizes, and to enter the Give-Away, either click here, or click on the Fifth Birthday Give-Away link on the left-hand side of any Eurodragster page. Good luck!

The Eurodragster Chronicles.
26th February: There have been a number of milestones in the history of Eurodragster since a group of webmasters got together at Santa Pod Raceway in 1997. Sharkman and Tog have put their heads together to write the definitive history of Eurodragster.com over the last five years. If you want to know how it all started, why it started, how it grew, where we've been and what we've done, then check out The Eurodragster Chronicles, which you can view by clicking here, or by clicking on the Eurodragster Chronicles link on the left-hand side of any Eurodragster page. You'll also find the legendary Punning Headlines, our favourite photographs from our Event Coverage, and some trivia just in case Eurodragster ever comes up in your local pub quiz.

Happy Birthday Darren!
26th February: It is not just Eurodragster who is celebrating a birthday today: we share a birthday with Santa Pod Raceway's International Race Director Darren Prentice. We are sure that everyone will want to join Sharkman and Tog in wishing Darren a very Happy Birthday.

LA Racing Parts on-line.
26th February: The news is all intimately linked today as Lee Child, who has donated two tickets to the Excitement Nationals at Shakespeare County Raceway to our Birthday Give-Away, has launched a web site for his company LA Racing Parts, which sponsors Eurodragster's Links pages.
©Eurodragster.com
The new LA Racing Parts web site at www.laracingparts.com features on-line shopping right off the bat, with LA Racing Parts' range of Nitrous Oxide systems already available for electronic ordering and more products to be added soon.

The very well-designed web site also features descriptions of the parts and services available for hot rods, daily drivers, racing, restoration and more.

Santa Pod announce lane sponsors.
26th February: Santa Pod Raceway, who have also donated a number of prizes to our Birthday Give-Away including VIP tickets to the Main Event and a Junior Dragster driving experience, have announced a new lane sponsor for the 2003 season. Although not new to motorsport, Nitrox Street Legal has become new sponsor of the right hand lane at Santa Pod. The Nitrox Street Legal brand comprises several innovative new products known as Octane Boost, 0-60, Rocket Boost plus the original Hot Shot, forming a comprehensive range of petrol and fuel additives promoting cleaner engines and performance enhancement.

Nitrox will join left lane sponsor Halfords - who have donated a sixty-piece professional socket set to our Birthday Give-Away - whose programme is set to continue for a third year. The UKs largest retailer of car parts and accessories enjoys a successful partnership with Santa Pod Raceway, helping to boost the profile of the worlds fastest motorsport.

"Securing sponsorship is hard work at the moment, but to have both lanes signed up once again for a packed season is great news!", says Caroline Day, who handles Marketing and Sponsorship for Santa Pod. "We put an emphasis on delivering high returns and have enjoyed working closely with sponsors on a number of interactive projects. Santa Pod has achieved a steady increase in sponsors year on year and this certainly looks to continue with many new opportunities arising via the FIA European Championship. Now in its sixth year, the pan-European series currently boasts a enviable world-wide TV distribution package as well as UK broadcasters such as Sky Sports, Channel 5 and Granada Men and Motors."
©Eurodragster.com
Santa Pod will also be promoting the second national Halfords Search for a Drag Star competition for eight to fourteen year olds, which will run during the school summer holidays. The competition will provide a rare opportunity for one promising youngster to race in Junior Dragster at the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod in September 2003.

Santa Pod Raceway will shortly be sending out their 2003 Calendar to everyone on their mailing list. "This year we have produced a comprehensive six-page calendar/poster and you can have a free copy!", says Caroline. If you would like to join Santa Pod's mailing list then send your name and address to info@santapod.com. If your address has changed then be sure to send your new details too.

Check out Santa Pod Raceway's web site at www.santapod.com for more details, including ticket prices for all 2003 events.

Heezen returns.
26th February: UK Bike photo-journalist Ian 'Turbo' Turburville writes that Dutch Top Gas racer Job Heezen is to return to the track in 2003. "Job's fantastic supercharged, petrol-burning Harley Davidson has been completely re-vamped with a new motor and many mods to the EFI system, and will be a frequent visitor to England this season", says Turbo. "He should also compete in the European Top Gas Series, which traditionally has a round at Shakespeare County Raceway where he still holds the Top Gas speed record. We look forward to seeing our good friend once more and hope that he can run deep into the sevens on his jewel of a race bike (right). Welcome back Job!"

Whilst Turbo is on the premises, Sharkman and Tog would like to say a big Thank You to him for designing and donating the 2003-model Eurodragster baseball caps, waving aside all talk of payment. Thanks for the birthday present, Turbo. If you would like to find out about the services which Turbo can offer then check out his web site at www.turboville.com.

Andréasson's Italian job?
26th February: If you were tuned in on 15th February you will have read that 2002 FIA European Top Methanol FC Champion Micke Kågered is to unveil his TMFC's new paintwork at the Stockholm Motorshow in April. Fellow TMFC racer Leif Andréasson is to go a step further by unveiling his TMFC's new body at the same show.

Leif and the team have been playing their cards very close to their chests about the new body, although the spectacularly unsubtle hints about Italy and cartoon of the FC draped in an Italian flag on their official web site would tend to imply a European body style.
©Eurodragster.com
All will be revealed at the Stockholm Motorshow on 5th-13th April where Andréasson Motorsports will have their own stand, 16-41 in Hall C. The Motorshow has its own web site at www.bilsalongen.com.

You can find out more, and discover what two of the team looked like in the early 1980s, on Leif's official web site at www.andreassonmotorsports.com.

CCSE now registering.
26th February: "So you've got a fast street car huh? Well, if it has a full exhaust system, treaded tyres and is MoT'd and taxed, it could well be legal to race in Custom Car's Street Eliminator series", says Kev Elliott of Custom Car magazine.

"RWYBing is one thing, but imagine racing in front of the crowds at big meetings. Imagine, too, racing in a championship which offered over £10,000 in prize funds last year, and looks set to top that already for 2003.

"To register to race, simply send a cheque for £15 made payable to Kelsey Publishing Ltd to:

Street Eliminator
Custom Car
Cudham Tithe Barn
Berry's Hill
Cudham
Kent
TN16 3AG

and we'll send you the rules for the 2003 season.

"You'll also need to be a member of one of the racers' clubs - details in the rules - and possess the necessary safety equipment relative to your car's speeds and times (again all explained in the rules).

"When you send the cheque, let us know basic details of your car, along with your address, and prepare to belong to one of the friendliest and popular classes at the track. With seven rounds throughout the season, reliability and consistency is as important as pure horsepower - just ask Jon Hollingworth or Alan Simms."
©Eurodragster.com
Another CCSE racer who would agree with Kev Elliott is John Sleath, who has updated his web site at www.john-sleath.com with pictures of Jon Hollingworth's Cortina on which he is currently working. "There are plenty of photographs and build up reports to look at", says John. John's own eight-second stree-legal Audi is just about ready for the 0-60 Challenge at Elvington in March. "With a bit of luck we should run good numbers", he says.

Carbon By Design export again.
25th February: When we spoke to Knut Söderquist of Carbon By Design back on
12th January, he told us about his company's latest item, a carbon fibre injector for Fuel bikes. This is now going into production with the first piece headed for Sweden next week for use by 2002 FIM European Supertwin Champion Anders 'Charley' Karling.

With the bike injectors on the production line, Knut has turned his attention to yet more custom in the USA. "We're now working on a carbon fibre injector for Funny Cars using PSI blowers", says Knut. "We're also sending samples of carbon fibre rear wing parts to John Force for evaluation on his new Funny Car body which he will début at Gainesville".
©Eurodragster.com
Carbon By Design are also working on titanium head studs which will save eight pounds in weight. "The threads want to burr but I found a company in Chesterfield who will put a special aerospace coating on the studs", says Knut. Again these are to be evaluated by John Force. "They're expensive, but t hey will spend the money to save the weight!", says Knut.

For more details on the bike injectors, FC PSI injectors, rear wing parts, head studs or any CBD products, contact Knut on 01933 385090 (evenings).

Limited-edition Bruiser.
25th February: Paul Marston Racing have announced that the Chryslercard PT Bruiser is likely to run only a limited schedule in 2003. The PMR team have been kept very busy with their Driver Installation and Passenger Ride schemes as well as tending to two new race cars, but Paul Marston tells us that the elbow room is still there for the popular PT Cruiser to put in appearances.

"Our intention was to run the ChryslerCard PT Bruiser in Super Modified during the 2003 season, but the runaway success of the Passenger Rides and the Drag Race Driving School has meant we have had to review our 2003 position including our plans for the Bruiser", says Paul Marston. "The funding is there, as is a competitive Chrysler-based Super Modified power plant for the ChryslerCard PT Bruiser. At a meeting of senior management at Paul Marston Racing we felt that there was a unique opportunity to give something back to the great sport of drag racing by devoting the time which the Rides and Drives Programme rightly deserved. However the ChryslerCard PT Bruiser will definitely be running at some events during the 2003 season, hopefully both at Santa Pod and Shakespeare County, including the Doorslammer Nationals at Shakespeare County in October, and we will be defending our Brighton Speed Trial Trophies and Titles in September. We have spoken to all of our business partners and explained our decision to limit the Bruiser's schedule. I am proud to say that they are all behind us a hundred per cent whatever we decide. They truly are a great bunch of people."
©Eurodragster.com
PMR have also announced that the Chryslercard PT Bruiser will be appearing at the Stars On Wheels car show in Belgium in March. "We met the organisers Hugo and his lovely wife Daisy at the European Finals last September", says Paul. "The final arrangements were concluded in January and come March we are off on our travels. Its a real honour to be invited to such an important and high-profile show. It will be the first time that the Chryslercard PT Bruiser has travelled to Europe and we are looking forward to it very much."

PMR's Driver Installation and Passenger Ride schemes still have some free places so if you are interested then check out the Paul Marston Racing web site at www.paulmarstonracing.com or call Paul's office on 0208 597 4575.

"I must thank our hard-working crew at PMR who have been the real stars of late", says Paul. "There is one heck of a lot of work to do in preparing two race cars from the ground up. The School cars are coming together wekk and our thoughts are now starting to focus on the beginning of a season which is fast approaching. With such a good season weather-wise last year it would be nice to see the same for 2003, but however the weather turns out we will be ready for Easter.

"We must thank all our business associates: Chrysler UK, ChryslerCard, 76 Racing Fuels and Oils, Street Machine/American Car World Magazine, MAC Tools, ATI Transmissions, Jeep Club UK, Black Box Sound and Light, Disco Equipment Hire, London Road Tyres - and everybody else. We owe you guys, as without you we would not be here."

25th February: Further to yesterday's reminder about the UK SFI Day which takes place at Santa Pod Raceway on Friday, Kjell Pettersson of SPR has been in touch to let us know that the Café in the pits will be open on Friday. The Café is next door to the Pod Shop, where the inspections will be taking place.

Turbo: clear the mantelpiece!
25th February: Bike photo-journalist Ian 'Turbo' Turburville has been in touch with details of the latest of his frequent must-have items.

"Did you buy one of the Limited Edition Vance and Hines die-cast Nitro Harley replicas last year? Does it look lonely on your shelf? Couldn't afford one? Fear not because from 1st March I will be taking delivery of the latest Vance and Hines die cast collectible in the same scale. It is an awesome model of the famous Harley Davidson V-ROD, Pro Stock Bike (right). It is not a limited edition this time, so is priced at just £44 or €65 including postage and packing. I am taking orders now on v-rod@turboville.com."

Web site updates.
25th February: UK Custom Car Street Eliminator racer Andy Frost has updated his Red Victor web site with the latest news from his workshop including the visit of a TV crew covering his participation in the 0-60 Challenge at Elvington. Return of the Cheerful Chappie.
24th February: UK Super Modified racer Steve Rawlings is set for a return to the track at April's Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod, after replacing the engine of his 8.3-second Toyota Supra which expired at last year's SPRC Summernationals. Steve, the only man in drag racing history to see the funny side of blowing an engine to bits, says that it is looking good for the mid-April race.

"Rob Loaring of ICE Automotive has been happily spending my money on it!", says Steve. "I've got a 461 with a special new sump - we're looking for power anywhere we can. The car is going into Webster Race Engineering in March to be baselined and to make sure that I can come out fighting!"
©Eurodragster.com
Steve has already had some interest from his fellow racers. "I picked the engine up last weekend and Andy Hone was knocking on my door to look at it about five minutes after I got home - the kettle hadn't even boiled!", he says. Andy Hone was one of a number of racers "Swooping like vultures" to borrow parts from Steve after his unfortunate episode last June, but Steve tells us that he has now got everything back and is aiming to hit the ground running. "I've had longer than most to get it sorted!", he says.

Swedish Dragracing League launched...
24th February: A domestic Championship has been launched in Sweden for the 2003 season, writes our good friend Christer Abrahamson of Svensk Dragracing. The Swedish Dragracing League, to be administered by Svensk Dragracing, will be contested over six events starting at Sundsvall in June and ending at the Linde Open in August.

Comp Eliminator, Stock Superstock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Junior Dragster, Super Gas Bike and Street Bike are the classes involved in the League, which will run alongside the Nordic Drag Racing Series.

You can read all about the Swedish Dragracing League (in Swedish) on the Svensk Dragracing web site at

...NDRS drivers welcome Santa Pod.
24th February: Håkan 'Halmhatt' Mattsson of the NDRS Drivers' Association, who races in Super Gas, has been in touch to welcome Santa Pod Raceway and the English racers into the Nordic Drag Racing Series. It was announced back on 19th December by our good friends at Svensk Dragracing that three rounds of the 2003 Nordic Drag Racing Series would be held at Santa Pod Raceway.
©Eurodragster.com
"We of the NDRS Drivers' Association would like to say that having Santa Pod in our series is the best thing which could happen", says Halmhatt. "We hope that this means that European racers are coming closer and that this is the start of something big for the future. We had Tim Adam at some of our races here last year and we hope that many more will follow his example. I competed against Tim in Super Gas and it was a lot of fun racing him, so I hope that in 2003 we can see different Super class drivers from all over Europe battling for victory. See you at the tracks!"

You can find the NDRS Drivers Association web site at www.forarforeningen.com.

IPA back for more!
24th February: UK Top Fuel Dragster team Carter Motorsport are proud to announce that their good friends at IPA Print Associates are pleased to continue their association with the team during 2003. Carter Motorsports PR Dan Welberry tells us that the Chesham-based print company have now become huge race fans and can't wait to get back to the track.

"We have a reputation for being a fast and reliable print service, so being associated with Europe's fastest and most reliable Top Fuel Dragster seems the obvious choice!" says Nigel Moore of IPA. "This reputation has been built on a number of things, not least a dedicated team of staff who pride themselves on their relationship with the client and an awareness of the advances in print technology. Not only an awareness but a pioneering spirit and a desire to embrace these advances, so as to stay ahead of the competition."

Examples of IPA's print quality will be displayed throughout the season in the Carter Motorsport pit area. Hero cards, posters and other items will all be provided by the company.

You can contact IPA on 01494 791532, or visit their web site at www.ipaprint.com. "Check out the picture on the Speed and Reliability section!", says Dan Welberry.

You can stay in touch with events in the Carter Motorsport pit on the team's official web site at www.andycarter.net.

UK SFI Day reminder.
24th February: The UK SFI Day takes place at Santa Pod Raceway this Friday, 28th February, and will be held in the Pod Shop in the pits between 10:00 and 15:00. The inspection team will be Arnie Kuhns, Tim Hyatt and Murf Mckinney and items to be inspected are as follows:

SFI clutch family: Specs 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5

SFI Spec 1.5 is a new SFI spec for Supercharged, Nitrous or Turbocharged doorslammers.
©Eurodragster.com
Specs 1.1 and 1.2 need to be recertified every two years, whilst Specs 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 are required to be recertified every year.

SFI bellhousing family: Specs 6.1, 6.2, 6.3

The recertification cycle for bell housing is five years for Spec 6.1, two years for Specs 6.2 and 6.3, and every year for any titanium bell housing.

The inspection fee is £70 for any approved clutch or bellhousing, and should be paid in cash on the day.

Antoniou checks out WRE.
24th February: UK Super Street racer Perry Antoniou has been keeping us all entertained recently with news items about his own return to the track and that of Perry's close friend and fellow racer Keith Ridley. Perry and Keith have been on another shopping trip, this time to Webster Race Engineering, and they were by all accounts impressed with what they saw.

"Have you been to Jon Webster's?", says Perry (not yet, but soon - Ed). "I accompanied Keith when he took his car there for some top secret modifications. We walked through the door, I was behind Keith, and all I heard as the workshop came into view was the usual word which generally comes out of Keith's mouth in every other sentence, and a sudden thud as his jaw hit the floor. I immediately shoved Keith out of the way to take a good look for myself.
©Eurodragster.com
"The premises are spotless, bright, superbly-equipped, and organised and big enough to cope with the future. Jon's attitude to customers, his friendliness, and his helpful nature will ensure that he now has another couple of customers on his list, and that he deserves all the business that I'm sure will be heading his way.

"The only other thing I can say is: Jon, be proud that your name is above that door because I've been racing many cars since 1986, and have been to many places, met many people and spent plenty of money, but there was always something missing everywhere I went, but not at Webster Race Engineering."

Web site updates.
24th February: Our good friend Erwin Raets has been hard at work updating the European Drag Racing Database with results and best performances from last year's Sko Uno Drag Festival at Mantorp Park together with the 2002 Easter Thunderball and FIA Main Event at Santa Pod. The European Drag Racing Database is one of the authorities on European drag racing with racers' best performances, records, historical Championship placings, and a lot more. As previously notified here on Eurodragster, 2003 Entry Fees have been restructured to take account of the differing duration of races. However, there has been a significant change since we originally published the proposed entry fees: due to increased ACU insurance fees, all bike classes will have to pay an extra £5. APIRA and SPRC are absorbing some of the cost of the rise in ACU insurance fees to reduce the extra amount paid by racers, and they are still negotiating with the ACU. 2003 entry fees are as follow:

  Two-day event Three-day event Four-day event
MSA British Top Methanol; MSA British Nitro Funny Car; Pro Mod £90 £100 £110
ET classes; Super classes; Super Modified; other car classes except Junior Dragster £75 £85 £95
Junior Dragster £40 £50 £60
ACU Top Fuel Bike £95 £105 £115
All ACU classes except Top Fuel Bike; 9.90 Bike; 10.90 Bike; all NAST Supertwin classes £80 £90 £100

The £25 supplement for late entry to races will remain in force in 2003. The closing date for all races, with the exception of the FIA Main Event and the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway, will remain at two weeks before the race. The closing date for the FIA Main Event and the FIA European Finals will now be three weeks before the race.
©Eurodragster.com
The prize fund for the 2003 UK National Championships remains the same as in 2003. In 2004 the prize fund will be raised by ten per cent, and rises will be in line with inflation from 2005. The Super Modified prize fund for 2003 will be the same as the Super Comp fund. This will be reviewed at the end of the 2003 season.

Racers are reminded that crew sign-on should be complete before their class' first qualifying session. Crew are encouraged to sign on as soon as possible after arriving at a race: as soon as Sign On is open crew, not just riders or drivers, can and should sign on.

ACU racers racing abroad and arranging their own insurance must send a copy of their insurance documents to the ACU.

The FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway is likely to be extended to four days in 2004; the FIA Main Event may also be extended to four days in 2004. The new first day of the race will be dedicated almost exclusively to Sportsman qualifying. The intention is to hold Sportsman eliminations on the third day of the race in order to reduce them to their final eight or sixteen on the eve of race day.

John Ledster is to attend an FIA meeting in Berlin in mid-July. Any teams with FIA Class or Championship regulation issues which they would like John to raise at the meeting should inform John by mid-June.

The MSA may require that Junior Dragster racers obtain International licences to race abroad. This affects all junior racing, not just drag racing, and is still under discussion. Both Clubs are working with the MSA on this issue.

Averstedt likes 'em long.
22nd February: Swedish Top Methanol FC and prospective Fuel FC racer Leif Helander's comment here on
13th February that "Top Fuellers are girls' cars" has had the ladies running to their keyboards to agree. We've already heard Anita Mäkelä and Øyvor Jacobsen's views on the subject, and Swedish Top Fuel Dragster and now Top Alcohol Dragster racer Viveca Averstedt wrote to Eurodragster last night to add her two cents' worth.
©Eurodragster.com
"Of course Top Fuellers are for girls!", said Viveca. "Why? Well , maybe because we love the long shape (longer is better?) or is it because we love the speed? Top Fuel v Funny Car, who is the fastest?"

Viveca also had a message for Anita and Øyvor: "Good luck and show the guys who can handle a Top Fueller!".

Team TIL diary.
22nd February: The UK's Team Titanium International Limited Funny Bike team had a busy weekend at Autosport International back in January. Dave Holland's Funny Bike was on display on the TIL stand for the Trade days before moving to Santa Pod Raceway's display on the Public days. Nigel Hoskison of Titanium International sent us an account of his Autosport weekend and brought us up-to-date on work on the low seven-second bike.

"During the show we were visited by sponsor Earls Performance Products, who also had a stand at the show. We will be using some of their updated products on the bike this season. Unfortunately Russell Bower of Rock Oil was unable to attend due to an accident at work. He did however send us copies of their 2003 calendar to display. It features an action shot of Dave Holland (taken by Sharkman of Eurodragster.com) on the May/June page. Tog and Sharkman of Eurodragster were welcome visitors on Friday. I would think that by now everyone has seen their reports and pictures (judging by our access stats, yes - Ed). New sponsors for 2003, Stainless Steel Fasteners, had their first close up look at the bike and were suitably impressed! We reckon that the additional steel nuts and bolts we will replace this year will save another two kilogrammes in weight. Stainless Steel Fasteners will be happy to quote for the supply of titanium or any other fasteners, contact David Barber on 01246 451818 or through their web site. Our other new sponsor for 2003, Snap-On Tools, are supplying a package of tools and equipment which will be delivered shortly. We were also approached at Autosport by a fellow exhibitor with a sponsorship proposal; a further meeting is planned at their works to finalise details, following which we hope to make an official announcement.
©Eurodragster.com
"When the trade show closed the bike was moved to Santa Pod Raceway's stand. Interest in all the cars and bikes was tremendous, it was a great advertisement for drag racing. Thank You to all the Santa Pod crew for the regular supply of refreshments throughout the two days, and to John Spuffard and the Showtime crew for taking the bike on their trailer when the show closed, which saved me the problem of picking it up from the NEC on Sunday night!

"The weekend after the show, we removed yet more steel fasteners for replacement with titanium, as the bike was progressively stripped down prior to re-assembly with the motor in the rails. The bodywork and panels will shortly be resprayed with the 2003 livery."

Nigel assures us that the bike will look just great in its new paintscheme - stay tuned for details.

Oriental Pod.
22nd February: Santa Pod Raceway have confirmed details of a new event for Japanese car owners. The Japanese Performance Show, run in association with Japanese Performance magazine, takes place on Sunday 12th October and is open to all makes and models of Japanese cars.

As well as a Run What You Brung, the event features a trade area for parts, clothing and accessories, a free Cars 4 Sale arena (just turn up on the day), ICE traders, family entertainment, helicopter rides and side-shows plus catering and bar facilities.

The top twenty Best Of Show Japanese cars will be invited into an exclusive display area. If you think that your car would be a candidate for the top twenty then send an E-Mail to info@santapod.com. One for the historians.
22nd February: UK Pro ET racer, and winner of Santa Pod Racers Club's Most Promising Newcomer award for the 2002 season, Kev Taylor has been in touch with a query which we are sure one or more of our many readers will be able to answer.

Kev, who races a ten-second 408 ci Ford Capri, asks: "Does anyone know the quickest ET a Ford Capri has ever run in the UK or Europe? I would be very interested to find out".

George Hoover.
21st February: Just as we went to post today's update, SPRC Press Officer Jon Crawford alerted us to the sad news that George Hoover died on Thursday at the age of 97. George was father, car owner and onetime Crew Chief of US Fuel Funny Car racer Tom Hoover, who is still a great favourite with UK fans.

George was always to be seen at the track with Tom, and longtime fans will remember that there was a time when the two could easily be confused. George was an excellent tuner, a fine sportsman, and a very friendly man with a ready sense of humour. The sport will be much the worse for his loss.

We are sure that all Eurodragster readers will want to join Sharkman and Tog in sending our very deepest sympathies to Tom Hoover, his family, and George's huge legion of friends.

Top Fuel is for girls.
21st February: Back on 4th February our good friends at Svensk Dragracing broke the news that Norway's Øyvor Jacobsen is to return to Top Fuel Dragster in 2003 after a ten-year break, teaming up with Rune Fjeld to contest the FIA Tour. Øyvor has been in touch with Eurodragster after reading the reactions of Anita Mäkelä and Leif Helander to her return.

"As Anita said, we have been good friends since the late 1980s", says Øyvor. "Anita is a wonderful person and an extremely good competitor. I have followed her career for all those years and I really look forward to competing against her. I can promise you all that we will stage a good battle for the title of Fastest Mum!
©Eurodragster.com
"I also think that Leif Helander is correct when he said that Top Fuel is for girls. Why? Because we are the best! I am convinced that the 2003 European Champion in Top Fuel will be a woman, so watch out guys, here we come! And fast..."

Øyvor tells us that the car in which she will be racing this season is Paul Romine's 2002 car. "It fits me like a glove", she says, "except for the reverser handle. Rune is changing that and he is working on some other necessary updates. We have to paint the car but we are on schedule, and we expect to turn up at Santa Pod early in April to make a few test runs and update my licence before the Easter Thunderball."

Stay tuned for more news including Øyvor's web site which will be launching soon.

Late start for Hawkins' FC.
21st February: Mark and Jackie Hawkins' Fuel Funny Car is likely to miss the start of the 2003 season, says Mark Hawkins. The beautiful purple and yellow Dodge Avenger broke into the fives last season with Gary Page at the wheel, but pressure of business looks set to keep the team away from the track at the start of 2003.

"It's a difficult decision to make", Mark Hawkins told Eurodragster yesterday. "We are going forward with the car, getting it ready, but I'm not going to say that we'll be appearing at the start of the season."

The team set themselves very high standards and with the business taking up much of Mark and Jackie's time, they are reluctant to appear before everything is right. "We won't take chances by running second-hand parts", said Mark. "We'd be doing ourselves and the fans an injustice if we did that. We go to races to make four passes, not one". Mark also told us that the team are seriously considering having a new chassis built. "That's not beyond the realms of possibility", he said. "I've had a quote for a new car."
Another story VERY ©Eurodragster.com
Mark said that the team may be back sooner rather than later. "Things move so fast in our line of business that for all we know we could be there in three months", he said. "No doubt you'll see the Yellow Terror out on the track!"

Driver Gary Page is happy to wait. "It's not like Mark and Jackie are sacking me!", he said. "The only thing was that I had just had my ECG test when Jackie called! I am renewing my licence, though, because when they are ready to run I will be driving. We are working on the car and as soon as things change then we'll be there."

Nikki needs your evidence.
21st February: if you've got a very long memory then you will recall that on
21st May 2002 we ran a story from Nikki Pilkington about the theft of her daughter's Italjet 50cc mini-motorbike which Supertwin Gas rider Nick 'Shaggy' Daniels had a few days before, to much hilarity, ridden down the track at the Speedfreaks Ball. We were very pleased to hear from Nikki that Leigh's bike has been found. This being the UK, though, nothing is straightforward and Nikki needs readers' help to ensure the bike's return.

"We've located the bike", says Nikki. "The police, after lots of convincing, have impounded it and now we have to prove that it is ours, despite having photos of it! The bike is exactly as it was the day it was stolen, except that the Shaggyshack stickers have been removed, yet still the police want us to prove that it is ours!
©Eurodragster.com
"If anyone is willing to send E-Mails or letters vouching for the fact that the bike is a one-off built by Shaggy and is ours, then we would be very grateful. Pictures with dates are also good - we're looking for any help which anyone can give. It's taken us all day to get the police to impound the bike, to have it so close yet be so far from claiming it is driving us mad, so any help would be appreciated."

If you can help with E-Mails or pictures then please drop Nikki a line at lemonkitten@btconnect.com.

Roll up for the Gasser circus.
21st February: Now that the popularity of old time Gasser racing is at an all time high in the UK, Executioners car club member Terry Howarth has formed a group called the 'Gasser Circus' with the intention of running these high-riding fifties and sixties race car replicas at events such as the NSRA Nostalgia Nationals and Hot Rod Drags at Shakespeare County Raceway, writes APIRA Press Officer Jerry Cookson. September's European Doorslammer Nationals is also included.

Terry, who runs his own '41 Ford Goldrush Gasser has already enticed the Executioners, Custom Car magazine, NSRA and the Dunksville Speed Shop as sponsors of the Circus.

Interested Gasser owners wishing to run in the Circus should send a recent photo and full description of their car, as well as a stamped addressed envelope, to:

Web site updates.
21st February: Showtime Fuel FC crew member Chris Dossett has found time between nappy changes to launched this year's British Nitro Funny Car Championship web page. As in previous years the site will provide a single location with links to all the news, pictures and reports on this year's series. "This year looks particularly promising with the very real prospect of more cars joining the Fab Four later on in the year", says Chris. "To get you in the mood the Championship site features a number of photos from last year's series, which you may not have seen before, taken by Ivan Sansom". Check it out at www.showtimeracing.co.uk/championship.html.

Chris has also undertaken a springclean on the Showtime Fuel FC site. "I have moved all the photo gallery pictures and video files to make some room for more additions this year, but they are all still available", says Chris. "In addition to this, most areas of the site have been tidied up a bit so take a look around". You can find the Showtime site at www.showtimeracing.co.uk.

Fagerström's matching pair.
20th February: From Björn Anderberg comes news and a picture of the Top Methanol Funny Car which Swedish Pro Mod star Freddy Fagerström will be campaigning in 2003, as well as his outrageous blown-alcohol pick-up.
©Eurodragster.com
"Freddy has borrowed the Funny Car (right, click on picture for larger version) from Magnus Larsson", says Björn. "He's going to drive the car at FIA races in 2003. The pick-up is being painted right now and will be painted the same as the Funny Car."

Björn offered more updates direct from the workshop, on behalf of our readers we wrote straight back and said "Yes please!", so stay tuned for the latest from Fast Freddy.

Gipp seeks artist.
20th February: UK Pro Stock Bike racer Richard Gipp is still looking for an individual or company to paint the new GSXR bodywork of his Sinwear/Straightline Racing bike. "We have an idea but we need a true artist to bring it to life", says Chris Tombleson of Straightline Racing. "This bodywork will be seen all over Europe this year, and on TV as the team plan to contest the Euro and UK Championships and as many other events and shows as possible including the Speedfreaks Ball and the Bulldog Bash."

If you can help then please contact Chris by E-Mail at sales@straightlineracing.co.uk.

NDRS Racers' Calendar, more NEAFPs.
20th February: Our good friends at Svensk Dragracing now have their Nordic Drag Racing Series Racers' Calendar available on their web site. "The Racers' Calendar is the more detailed race calendar showing which classes contest which event", said Christer Abrahamson of Svensk Dragracing. "The NDRS contains big races where all classes can run, some are run together with the FIA/UEM tour, and some of them are really small races where the slower classes got a chance to be kings!"

Christer explained the strategic implications of the NDRS calendar. "There are for example sixteen possible races for Super Comp racers, but when the points are calculated only seven of them count. Which races give you the best opportunity to earn good points? Which races gives you the most fun? It is all there, so sit down and plan the season! Of course you can go to (almost) every race and have a lot of fun, but is that the right thing to do strategically?"

The Racers Calendar page on the Svensk Dragracing web site is very well-designed and easy to follow. You can check it out www.dragracing.se.

Another good friend, Erwin Raets of the European Drag Racing Database, has passed on details of more NEAFPs, this time a number of races in Norway. For the uninitiated, NEAFPs are events at which foreign competitors are able to compete. The 2003 Norwegian NEAFPs are as follow:

9th-11th May: Spring Nats, Gardermoen
24th-25th May: Islanders Speed Weekend, Frya
6th-8th June: Thunder Valle, Valle
14th-15th June: Summer Nats, Gardermoen
1st-3rd August: Drag Challenge, Gardermoen
23rd-24th August: Norwegian Finals, Gardermoen
©Eurodragster.com
We have added the Norwegian dates to our 2003 NEAFPs page, which you can view by clicking here, or by clicking on the 2003 NEAFPs link on the left-hand side of any Eurodragster page. The European Drag Racing Database at www.eurodrag.com has a complete European calendar for 2003.

Race Rock rockin'.
20th February: Back on 1st February we brought you news of Race Rock, a bike and car show to be held in Norwich on Sunday 23rd March with live bands, trade stalls and more. Organiser Les Harris, 2002 NAST Supertwin Street Champion, gave us the latest update on what is rapidly turning into an event not to be missed.

On the race vehicle front, Les tells us that a number of sprint and road race bikes and a car have joined the static display. "I visited a couple of guys who run bike shops locally", says Les. "They are bringing a Jap sprint bikes, a road race bike, and a 125 Yamaha sprinter which still holds two world records from 1968. It's really great to have some really old sprint bikes". Added to these are a historic Isle of Man bike, an open-wheeled single-seater race car, and the first showing of two - or possibly three - Junior Drag Bikes, which will be taking to the track at Shakespeare County Raceway this year.
©Eurodragster.com
The contingent of stands is also growing, with Avon Park International Racers Association bringing along a stand with video display as well as a Christmas Tree, Black Bear will be selling Harley merchandise, and a tattoo stall will also be in attendance. Les' wife Lyn has been working on painted glass for her own stall. Lou, the landlady of the King Edward VII pub which is hosting Race Rock, is having event T-shirts printed, and prizes are steadily coming in for the raffle. The raffle will be drawn at 5:00 pm and is followed by a huge bonfire at 6:00 pm.

Finally, Les tells us that parking has now been sorted out - the event is taking place in the pub's car park which precludes its use. "I have arranged with the local Lidl supermarket to use their car park for parking", says Les. "It is two minutes' walk away and on the same side of the road as the pub. The car park is huge so you'll all be able to get in!"

The event is attracting interest from the local media, with Radio Broadland and Anglia TV the latest to pledge coverage.

Race Rock takes place on Sunday 23rd March at the King Edward VII pub, which is just north of Norwich city centre at 63 Aylsham Road (the A140, click here for a map). The show is open from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. Entry is a mere £1 which includes free entry to a contest to guess the weight of Les' Harley.

York Dragway 2003 Calendar.
20th February: We are indebted to Howard Holmes for forwarding an extensive calendar of events at the UK's York Dragway in 2003.

"This year's events include the Northern Drag Racing Championship, Hot Rod Challenge, American Superstock Series, National Street Car Challenge, Mopar Muscle Shootout, Wild Bunch, Street Racer Championship, RWYBs, Cruise Missile Shootout and Mini vs. Beetle Shootout", says Howard.

"The American Super Stock Challenge was established last year and has quickly become popular with racers and spectators alike; it's poised for a great year in 2003. This class predominantly attracts classic American muscle, the cars are factory production cars or at least of 'streetable' appearance, although not necessarily taxed and tested. With open headers and slicks allowed, as well as nitrous oxide injection, these cars make an impressive spectacle. It is 'heads up' racing, as opposed to 'bracket' (or handicap) racing, run within a 12.50 index with a .500 pro tree, but conistancy and reliability naturally play their part. Last year's series presented a field of over twenty cars, which provided much rivalry between the GM, Ford and Chrysler marques, with over a dozen classic Chryslers represented. If you have a classic American (or any American which you profess to have some performance!), this is a great opportunity to get involved! Give Tim Holmes a call on 0114 264 8185.
©Eurodragster.com
"York will also be 'Running with the Bunchers' in August. The Wild Bunch series for nostalgia race cars compete heads-up but against-the-clock. At each meeting, teams select a dial-in time, and attempt to run as close to it as possible, with no penalty for breaking out. Final results are calculated as a percentage over the total number of runs, with the winner being the team running consistantly closest to the original dial-in.

"The Hot Rod Challenge is a very inclusive class for Street Cars to compete at York Dragway. Providing the vehicle has a current MOT certificate, it can even be (horror of all horrors) front wheel drive, if you feel so inclined. Or 4-wheel drive. Slicks, open headers, nitrous are all allowed. It's run to a .500 sportsman tree and is good, competitive fun. To get yourself involved call Cath Napier on 01325 350 268.

"Most racers are also eligible to enter other series such as the Northern Drag Racing Championship, a two-tier bracket series, at no additional cost once they are signed on to race.

Credit is due to the excellent on-track organisation provided by Pennine Drag Racing Club. York's 'Run Wot You've Brungs' are excellent value if for no other reason than the number of runs you can make. Example: at last October's RWYB almost 1200 passes were made in the day. York also rightly prides itself on its friendliness: if it's your first time out, or you are a little rusty, you will find the PDRC marshals and other competitors alike friendly and helpful."

Hal Far leads off 2003 season.
19th February: Anthony Borda, President of the
Malta Drag Racing Association, has been in touch to tell us about the first race of 2003, at Malta's Hal Far Raceway.
©Eurodragster.com
"We are starting our National Drag Racing Championship with our first event, on 22nd and 23rd of February", says Anthony. "I hope that the weather will hold up, so that we can see over one hundred competitors taking each other on. The main attraction will be the Top Methanol Dragsters."

You can read all about the Maltese drag racing scene on the excellent MDRA web site at www.maltadragracing.com.

About awnings.
19th February: If you are on the lookout for a new awning or would like to repair your existing item then UK 10.90 Bike racer Sandra Chaplain and one of her sponsors may have just the thing for you.

"Looking forward to the new season? Do you have an awning/E-Z Up but does it leak and let in the wind? Is your awning canopy kaput? Fancy an awning to enhance your pit space - something which looks professional enough to attract/impress sponsors?

"If so then one of Think Pink Racings sponsors, S Robb and Son, can offer an unbeatable service. Robbs can offer anything from repairs and upgrading of existing awning/E-Z Up (windows, zips, mudflaps, draft seals, straps and even gutters to make a rain-tight join between two or more free standing awnings); to new sides, canopies or complete awnings which attach to race trucks and trailers or are free-standing. They are available in a wide range of colours, in quality weatherproof material.

"Robbs have also developed a new very effective and quickly assembled system sides for E-Z Up type awnings, which make the whole thing extremely stable and wind resistant (not that we experience much bad weather in England of course). The system can be added to your existing awning or fixed to new sides or canopies. We have this system on both of our E-Z Ups and can guarantee it works.

"Robb's also produce waterproof covers to convert open trailers into enclosed trailers (to keep your car or bike dry for that 'odd' occasion when it rains during the season!).

"Whats more (and of particular interest to drag racers) is that Robb's racer prices are unbeatable. In the next few weeks they will also be offering a new range of bike and race car covers, custom-made from a waterproof, breathable material.

"If you would like more details, please contact Sandra by E-Mail at thinkpinkmcr@netscape.net."

WRE Test Days update.
18th February: Back on
31st January we brought you the news that Webster Race Engineering have organised six midweek test days at Santa Pod Raceway, on Wednesdays 19th March, 16th April, 18th June, 16th July, 20th August and 17th September. Jon Webster of WRE tells us that there has been a lot of interest in the test days, especially 16th April, so with limited places available early booking is advised.
©Eurodragster.com
We now have available an entry form for the test days which can be printed then snail-mailed or faxed to WRE. Click here to open the entry form.

Jon added that in the event of rain-off, £90 of the £120 entry fee will be credited to a later test day, and asked us to stress that a DVLC - not Competition - licence must be presented on the day with the exception of Junior Dragster.

Each test day is open to both cars and bikes and will feature a fully-prepped track along with full marshal and paramedic cover. Gates will open at 9:00 am with the track open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a half hour break for lunch. Mobile catering will also be on site at each event.

Grumpy goes Pro Stock.
18th February: UK Super Street Bike racer Paul 'Grumpy' Watson has announced that he is to move up to Pro Stock Bike for the 2003 season. Paul purchased Alan Cook's Pro Stock Bike at the end of the 2002 season but was widely expected to take off the wheelie bars, swap the slick for an MT, and remain in SSB.

"I feel this will be the right move both for myself and my team", says Paul. "I wish all of the Super Street boys and girls lots of luck in seeking that seven-second run."

Grateful Gus.
18th February: UK Pro Mod racer Andy Robinson has been in touch to express his gratitude to everyone who voted for his '53 Studebaker, which won Santa Pod Racers Club's Best-Looking Car trophy for the 2002 season.
©Eurodragster.com
"A big Thank You to all the Eurodragster readers who chose the Studebaker as the Best Appearing Car", says Andy. "It's always great to win an award, but knowing that racers and fans voted for the Stude makes it far more special. Thanks everyone - look forward to seeing you at the track this year."

0-60 Challenge update.
18th February: It's all updates today as we have also heard from Dwayne of Anything Goes Promotions regarding the 0-60 Challenge which takes place at Elvington on 15th March. "We are now at capacity both in terms of entrants and spectators", he says, "so unless you have already contacted me it is too late to attend. Unfortunately anyone just turning up on the day will have to be turned away". If you can't make it then stay tuned as Eurodragster will bring you all the news.

European Drag Lists updated.
18th February: Bill Pratt's excellent Drag Racing List web site is due to be updated very shortly with European Personal Bests in Top Fuel Dragster, Fuel FC, Top Methanol Dragster and Funny Car, Jet FC and Fuel Altered. Any racers whose information is incorrect is asked to E-Mail Phil Cottingham at phil@dragsterworld.com so that corrections can be applied. "I would like to thank the following, without whom updates would not have been possible: Eurodragster.com, Eurodrag.com, Michael Gullquist, the European Top Methanol Racers Association, Mark Gredzinski, and anyone else whose sites I have studied for information", says Phil.

Web site updates.
18th February: The American 70s Funny Cars web site has been updated with a page of historical photographs of European FCs. The page has been compiled with input from Alan Currans of the Acceleration Archive and Chris Dossett of Trakbyte's UK Drag Racing History, and is well worth a look, not least since it proves that Toyota FCs were a European idea. Check it out at www.computermagiconline.com/70sfunnycars.

Ellis stays in Super Mod.
17th February: UK Super Modified racer Graham Ellis is looking for an engine after deciding against a move to Pro Modified in 2003. Graham had plans to step up after running in the sixes at the Doorslammer Shootout at Shakespeare County Raceway last year.
©Eurodragster.com
"I have sold my engine to a Scandinavian Pro Mod team", says Graham. "Now that I am staying in Super Modified I am seeking a Super Mod engine, nitrous-equipped, to go with my new Lenco."

Graham is a little wistful about the change in plan but has plenty of reason to be pleased. "I'm gutted at not running Pro Mod", he says. "I loved those six-second passes and I'm sure we could have improved. Did you know that that first six was the first full pass I put on that engine? No-one, I don't care who they are, has ever done that as easily as we did and I am proud of that."

If you have an engine surplus to requirements then check out the Parts Wanted section of our Jeff Bull Race Engines-sponsored
Swap Meet where you can find out exactly what Graham is looking for.

Five years of Eurodragster.
16th February: It hardly seems possible, but Eurodragster reaches its fifth birthday on 26th February 2003. The site had existed for a very short while before that, but the publication of our first news item on 26th February 1998 (for the record, about an update to Andy Carter's web site) marked the beginning of what has become the daily news service for which Eurodragster is most known.
©Eurodragster.com
On 26th February we will be launching a Fifth Birthday competition with a long list of great prizes, so be sure to come back on the 26th to find out all about that.

In the meantime, we have received our first birthday greeting which was very kindly sent by Andy Marrs of TSI Timers Europe. We have set up a page for birthday messages which you can view by
clicking here, or by clicking on the Fifth Birthday Greetings link on the left-hand side of any Eurodragster page.

If you would like to send a birthday greeting for inclusion on the page then please send an E-Mail to birthdaycard@eurodragster.com.

Hancox plans return.
16th February: UK Outlaw Anglia racer Bob Hancox is to return to the track in 2003 with his Runaway Anglia after sitting out 2002. Bob, who as well as racing does a lot of sterling work at shows and displays showing boy racers just what consitutes a burnout, took the year to work on new systems with, he says, some surprises along the way.
©Eurodragster.com
"We are hoping to come back this year with something better", says Bob. "We also expect that our Crew Chief Maz will have his first run in the car this year, at a Run What You Brung. After all those years of him shouting at me, I will be shouting at him! If there is anyone out there who would like to help run the car then we have plenty of space on the car for sponsorship."

Bob tells us that he is looking forward to seeing all the marshals, officials and crews for another season's racing. "We would like to wish all of the Outlaw Anglias good luck for 2003", he says, "and thanks to Eurodragster for the news reports throughout the year (you're welcome, Bob - Ed)."

Bob says that his tecchie Andy will launch a new web site some time in the next few months. Finally he asks if Tush can get in touch - if you're out there, Tush, then you know where Bob is.

Web site updates.
16th February: UK Custom Car Street Eliminator racer Andy Frost has added a message board to his Red Victor web site at www.redvictor1racing.co.uk. "The message board is for news, views, tech swaps etc", says Andy. "I'm trying to make it like the NMCA board which discusses and solves a whole range of tech issues."

Eurodragster staffer Sharkman has posted on his personal web site Sharkman's Top End Tales the next-to-last in his series of 2002-season videos. The latest clip features Top Methanol Dragster semi-final action from the FIA Main Event with Dave Wilson and Rob Turner facing off. Check it out at www.topendtales.com.

SID sponsor Carter.
15th February: Jon and Sharon Hogarth of
Specialist In Design are to sponsor the Carter Motorsport First National Telecom Top Fuel Dragster with its new paint job.

"We know Jon will do a great job for us as he did the same paint scheme less than two months ago on Knut Söderquist's hire car!" said Andy Carter. "We had such positive feedback following the unveiling at the Autosport Show, with a number of people commenting on the quality of the paint. Jon took our design away and really bought it to life as well as adding in some of his own little touches. He also carried the design over to my race helmet which really helped to finish the overall look. The level of customer service was superb and we would strongly urge all race teams requiring an individual and professional image to call SID."

"We were delighted when Andy chose SID to paint the original car prior to the Autosport Show, as we consider Carter Motorsport to be one of the most professional teams in drag racing", said Sharon Hogarth. "So when they called us again regarding the new car, we more than happy to step in and help. Jon and I are proud to be associated with Andy and the team and look forward to an exciting Top Fuel season ahead."

To find out more about the range of services offered by SID visit their web site at www.specialistindesign.co.uk or call 01493 651198.

You can stay in touch with developments in the Carter Motorsport pit on the team's web site at www.andycarter.net.

Showtime crew grows, new Read.
15th February: Congratulations to Showtime Fuel FC crew member and Trakbyte's webmaster Chris Dossett and his wife Jo on the birth of their daughter Samantha Jane, who weighed in at 7lb 8.5 oz last Thursday. Jo and Samantha are doing fine although we are not so sure about Chris, who describes himself as being "in a sleep-deprived trance".

There must have been something in the water nine months ago since we have also heard from Tim Read who has become a proud father with the birth of his daughter Chloe on 4th February (Tim and Chloe, right). Tim's partner Fabienne and Chloe are now at home and are doing very well. "Thanks also to all drag racing friends who have sent their congratulations, you know who you are and it is much appreciated", says Tim. If you want to send Tim and Fabienne a congratulatory E-Mail then you can drop him a line at tim.read@which.net.

We are sure that all of our readers will want to join Sharkman and Tog in welcoming Samantha and Chloe and congratulating Chris and Jo and Tim and Fabienne.

News from the Kennel.
14th February: UK Wild Bunch racer Scottie 'Mansize' Durant has announced that his new injected-alcohol Big Block Chevy Topolino altered In The Dog House Again is nearly ready for action.

"The altered was started in the latter part of 1999 after selling my old car", says Scottie. "Whilst building my car I've helped or crewed for Nick Connor, Leigh Turland, Chris Hartnell, Wendy Baker and my buddy 'Turbo Turtle' Mark Turton. There's been much laughter and enjoyment, but now it's my turn to play and boy am I going to!"
©Eurodragster.com
Scottie tells us that the altered was built by Paul Stubbings, with others helping to get it finished. The car already has three sponsors:
Every Bottom Drawer quality adult toys and gifts "For action off the track" (parental advisory on that web site - Ed), Demonscream Web Design and Hosting Services who supplied all the vinyl graphics for the altered, and Knight Vibes Mobile Music Entertainment; "To have a ball give them a call" on 01494 758263 or 07734 009234.

"I have just a few people whom I would like to thank", says Scottie. "Paul Stubbings for all his time, my partner Karen Talbot for all her support, my son Zak-Charlie, Mark and Geoff Turton, Nick Connor, Dickie T, Leigh Turland, John Parkinson, Steve Dale, Chris Hartnell, Elliot Jones, Joe Pleterski, Wendy Baker, Colin and Vicky Ryan, Steve Rumble, Philippa Granville-George, Mark at MC Building Services, Andy Robinson at Robinson Race Cars, and Andy and the gang at Berkshire Metals."

Stay tuned for news on Scottie's new web site.

Just as we always suspected...
14th February: UK Super Street racer Perry Antoniou writes with an entertaining story which proves what we have known all along.

"I recently acquired a Sunbeam Lotus, which had been stored for seventeen years, as my daily run around. I donated all the now-redundant hard-core parts from my race car to the engine including MSD ignition, retard and two-step and some direct port Nitrous Oxide.

"I was then invited to a Practical Classics photo-shoot which took place at Bruntingthorpe on Wednesday. Along with the usual concours model and a fast road spec-car there were some serious 250-260 bhp 'works' cars there for the article. I decided that 80 bhp of Nitrous should show them a thing or two! After getting the cold shoulder from all present (either because I'm a bloody foreigner, or because they thought I was bullshitting them about the installed parts) we all went out for some V-formation moving group photographs. Then the photographer started waving us to start using the track for our enjoyment.

"At that point I heard everyone else drop gear, go sideways into the corner ahead and pass me. I was having none of it. I came out of the corner, armed the nitrous system, and nailed my foot to the floor, passing them like they were ALL standing still, with huge banging noises and flames from my measly standard exahust as I was changing gear and the two-step was kicking in. I was ahead by about three hundred yards coming into the corners, giving me enough time to slow down, take it gently through, and then just as they all thought they would gain on me, I was out of the bend and back on the nitrous leaving them tailing behind. This went on for as long as the bottle lasted, which is never long enough.
©Eurodragster.com
"Consultation began about what I had proved. The conclusion was, and I quote, they all belived that drag racers really do know better, and that visits to the Pod would be beneficial to understand the care, attention to detail, technical knowledge, and ultimately performance which we all put into our sport. The fact that we like to share our knowledge, and take pride in everything we make our cars to be, ensures that we will always be highly-respected by other forms of motorsport - even if they give the impression that they doubt our capabilities."

Perry adds that further to our story on 5th February about his good friend Keith Ridley acquiring the Hairy Canary Escort, Keith has now had a haircut and so has sanded the 'Hairy' from the car.

...just as Anita always suspected.
14th February: Finnish Top Fuel Dragster racer Anita Mäkelä dropped us a line after reading Leif Helander's comments about Top Fuellers in yesterday's news. "Give my very best regards to Leif", said Anita. "He sounded so sweet and I fully agree with him - Top Fuellers are for girls!". Sounds like a warning to us...

Prostar DVD released.
14th February: Bike photo-journalist and racer Ian 'Turbo' Turburville has just received the first of Brian Johnson's AMA/Prostar DVDs and writes to tell us that he is very impressed by what he sees. "I don't have a DVD player but I put it in my computer and was amazed", says Turbo. "It is a whole different animal to the video, crystal-clear picture and stereo sound. It is split into handy chapters so that you can access any part instantly, improved graphics leap from the screen. You can zoom in, freeze frame, take still images off the screen and print them, fantastic! Disc two is nearly ready and I can't wait!"

If you are still mulling over a Valentine present for the biker in your life, or if you fancy treating yoursef, then you can purchase the DVD via Brian Johnson's multimedia web site at www.dragpix.com, or from Turbo's web site at www.turboville.com. In each case the DVD is £12.95 plus p+p. Customers in the USA can get copies from www.schnitzracing.com.

Web site updates.
14th February: The latest update to Alan Curran's Acceleration Archive has a firm emphasis on nitro. Alan has added a sixth page of Funny Cars as well as another set of Rob Cook's photographs. "The Funny Car pictures are almost all action shots, and the list of drivers reads like a Who's Who of Funny Car pilots of the 1970s and 1980s", says Alan. "Dennis Priddle, Clive Skilton, Allan 'Bootsie' Herridge, Owen Hayward, Dave Stone, Liam Churchill and Roland Pratt. Plus - you have seen the six-wheeled Tyrell Formula 1 car but have you ever seen a Funny Car with five wheels? Also uploaded this week is a page of thirty four images of Top Fuel, cars and people, as seen through the lens of Rob Cook". You can find the Acceleration Archive at www.theaccelerationarchive.co.uk.

See Söderquist for hose tests.
13th February: It was announced in our 1st February update that fuel and oil hoses on Top Fuel Dragsters will need to undergo hydrostatic testing starting this season. Knut Söderquist of Carbon By Design has announced that he will be able to test hoses both at his workshop and, during the season, at the track.

"I have built an electric hose-testing unit", said Knut. "I have just got back from Pomona where I saw how they tested hoses and I think my unit is better! I have three hundred NHRA tags, and I will be charging £5.50 per hose to test and tag."
©Eurodragster.com
Knut said that he will be taking his test unit with him on the FIA Tour in 2003. "People are asking themselves 'What will we do when we break a line or need to change a line at the track?'. Now anyone who needs a test will be able to come to my trailer. I can test lines from number 12 to number 3."

Any racer visiting the SFI Day at Santa Pod Raceway on Friday 28th February will be able to leave hoses at Santa Pod and Knut will test them and return them within a week.

If you would like any more details then you can call Knut on 01933 385090 (outside the UK +44 1933 385090) any evening.

Knut said that he has "Top Fuel Dragsters coming out of my ears", so we asked him about TF driver line-ups in the Carbon By Design team in 2003. "Susanne Callin will be running one of my Top Fuellers on the Swedish Top Fuel Tour, and hopefully some FIA dates and the Easter Thundreball", he said. "I'm also talking to Robin Read and some other names". Stay tuned for more news.

Helander still planning Fuel FC move.
13th February: If you were tuned in to our 2002 FIA European Finals event coverage, you will remember that Swedish Top Methanol FC racer Leif Helander mentioned that he planned to move to Fuel Funny Car in 2003 if he could sell his TMFC. Whilst we were speaking to Knut Söderquist about the above news item, Knut mentioned that he had been helping Leif to collect the parts for a Fuel FC.

"The chassis is from one of my Budweiser Funny Cars", said Knut. "It was driven by Harlan Thompson and has made thirty passes at most. The chassis has been updated to the latest spec. The car has a new body, new fuel and oil system, and new fuel and clutch management systems. In fact I would say eighty per cent of the parts are together. Leif and Nisse Lindgren hope to match race at Mantorp Park this year and maybe run some rounds in the British Nitro Funny Car Championship."
©Eurodragster.com
Leif Helander told Eurodragster that the Fuel FC plans are contingent upon his selling the Starkotter Top Methanol FC. "My Funny Car is for sale either as a turn-key operation, or for a good price I will sell the entire engine and drivetrain, or the rolling chassis and body", he said. "We have had some interest but have not sold anything yet - I've got to sell it to be able to run the Fuel car. Leif Andréasson is helping out by trying very hard to find us a sponsor".

Leif hasn't changed his mind about Top Fuel Dragsters. "I wouldn't get into one of the long cars", he said. "I still say that Top Fuellers are girls' cars!"

If you are interested in purchasing the Starkotter TMFC then check out the team's official web site at www.starkotter.se.

Want to trade hero cards?
13th February: We've had an E-Mail from Carl Robinson, who would be interested in trading hero cards with fellow fans. "Is anyone interested in trading Doorslammer hero cards for cards from the United States?", says Carl. "I understand that the handouts in Europe aren't as popular or plentiful as in the USA, but I have a few from Europe which are quite nice, and I'd love to do some trading!"
©Eurodragster.com
If you would like to trade cards with Carl then you can E-Mail him at CMRobinson@webtv.net.

Robinson backs Super Modified.
12th February: The Super Modified Racers Association have announced that Andy Robinson of Robinson Race Cars has signed up as a Super Modified contingency sponsor for the 2003 Season. "We warmly welcome Andy's involvement with the class", says SMRA Secretary Sharon Hogarth.
©Eurodragster.com
"We are very happy to be involved with Super Modified as sponsors this year", says Andy Robinson. "We are offering Andy Robinson Race Cars vouchers to the value of £50 for the winner at each Super Modified Championship round, and £30 for the runner up. We've been really interested to see Super Modified developing into a very competitive class over the last couple of years. One thing which has really impressed us is the high level of commitment the racers have to running Super Mod. Im sure that this enthusiasm is going to ensure some great racing in the coming championship."

"This is great news for the class and for the 2003 season, and the SMRA would like to thank Andy for his support", says Sharon Hogarth.

You can find out all about Super Modified on the class' official web site at
www.eurodragster.com/supermod.

Devilish news.
12th February: UK Top Methanol Funny Car team She Devil Racing have launched a web site at www.shedevilracing.com. "The site has been designed by Paul at Abacus Web Design with the assistance of Simon Pocock, who will be updating it throughout the season", says driver Steph Milam.

As for the Dodge Daytona FC, Steph and husband and Crew Chief Dave tell us that the 6.7-second, 216 mph engine combination will remain the same, but that the team hope to keep improving the performance with some fine-tuning. The chassis will be updated to keep up with rule changes and everything will be freshened for the start of the season.
©Eurodragster.com
The She Devil team have received product sponsorship for 2003 from Pro Seal, Goodridge, and Brighton Tyres and Exhausts. "We would like to thank them for their support", says Steph. "We still need financial backing so if anyone has any spare cash then please send it our way!"

The new She Devil web site is very nicely-designed and well worth a look, featuring news, history, team profile, sponsors, results and more.

Europe's fastest Emmerdale fan returns.
11th February: Finnish Top Fuel Dragster racer
Anita Mäkelä has announced her return to the track after taking a year out in 2002 to expand her chicken farm. 2000 FIA European Top Fuel Dragster Champion Anita, who admits to an addiction to UK soap opera Emmerdale (twelve-step programmes are available - Ed), plans to contest all six FIA Championship rounds this year.

"We're getting ready for 2003", said Anita in a phone call to Eurodragster yesterday. "The chassis has been updated to the latest SFI specification, and we have got a lot of spare parts. Some are from 2001 but they don't go rotten on the shelf!". Anita, husband (and also Top Fuel racer) Tommi Haapanen and the team had a new set-up in the dragster in 2001, and recorded their first four-second pass that year. "We were taking the first steps with that tune-up, and this year we will continue our progress with it", said Anita.

As well as working on her business, Anita has found time to embark upon a new hobby. "Everyday life has been so boring that I am really looking forward to racing", she said, "but I have taken up horseback riding whilst I have been away. First Emmerdale and now another British hobby!". Anita is however a little concerned that she might have suffered by taking the year out. "As I driver I know that it is just like getting back on a horse, but the touch is missing", she said. "We are doing all six FIA rounds but I don't know if we will be testing yet - personally I would prefer to test before we start racing". There have been some changes in the team structure with Sami Lehtimki taking over as Crew Chief, and some of Tommi's crew from his Top Fuel days also returning to the team.
©Eurodragster.com
Anita is looking forward to mixing it with all of her old adversaries and some new ones. "Micke Kågered is the one I fear the most", she said. "He's a great guy but I have always feared him and I always will - he's my old nightmare! But all the teams are equally capable of quick ETs and big speeds, it is a case of when you do it - the earlier in the season you get the tune-up in place, the better. And it seems that there will be so many teams in Top Fuel this year that it could be the biggest FIA class - I wonder if there will be enough room for us all in the pits!"

Anita was very pleased to hear that Øyvor Jacobsen is also returning to Top Fuel. Anita and Øyvor have never raced but they are very good friends. "We've been mates for a long time", said Anita. "It's good to have both Øyvor and her team back. It'll be the Battle of the Fast Mums!"

Anita has always had a special place in her heart for Santa Pod Raceway and the UK fans. "We're looking forward to coming home to England - and I am looking forward to catching up with Emmerdale!", she said.

Anita's web site will be updated in March.

Karling cuts season for US Tour.
11th February: Reigning FIM/UEM European Supertwin Champion Anders 'Charley Karling, will not be a contender for the Championship this year, writes the Karling team's PR official Stefan Boman (photo ©Stefan Boman). Stefan reveals that Charley will be participating in four US events during 2003. Unfortunately, to ship the bike in time for the first American event, the team will miss most of the European season.

The team plan to attend some early season European races although at this stage, before there is an exact shipping date, the races in which they will participate is still in question. They will necessarily not be UEM events as there is no chase for points.

The Karling bike will first appear in the US at an industrial exhibition show with their main sponsor Uddeholm on 15th-18th September. The team will then contest the following races:

AHDRA Indy Nationals, Indianapolis, 19th-21st September
NHRA Route 66 Nationals, Joliet, 25th-28th September
NHRA OReilly Nationals, Dallas, 9th-12th October
AHDRA JIMS Las Vegas Nationals, 17th-19th October

You can find out more about Karling Racing on the team's official web site at www.karlingracing.com.

Teboul to blast Thunderball.
11th February: Santa Pod Raceway track manager Kjell Pettersson has confirmed that France's Eric Teboul will be putting in passes on his Rocket Bike at the Easter Thunderball on 19th-21st April. Eric brought his low six-second bike to the Flame and Thunder Show at Santa Pod last November but was prevented from putting in any runs by the appalling weather. "At that event we discussed the possibility of Eric coming back for Easter and did a deal in principle, which was confirmed in December", says Kjell. "I have now heard from Eric again and he has confirmed that he will be here at Easter."
©Eurodragster.com
Eric has so far recorded a best in the 6.1s on less than a half pass, recording a speed just over 200 mph at half-track on that run. The bike is easily capable of a five-second pass and Eric is very keen to prove it, especially after being robbed of the chance in November.

You can read more about the Easter Thunderball, including ticket prices, on Santa Pod Raceway's web site at www.santapod.com or call 01234 782828.

A Japanese Performance Show takes place on 12th October. The media sponsor for the event is CHP Publishing and its magazine Japanese Performance. Fuel FCs to Excite at SCR.
10th February: LA Performance Services have confirmed that two rounds of the 2003 British Nitro Funny Car Championship are to be contested at Shakespeare County Raceway. The Excitement Nationals on 3rd-5th May and the Allstar Nationals on 23rd-25th August will form the first and third rounds of the series, with the second and fourth rounds taking place at the FIA Main Event and the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod in May and September.
©Eurodragster.com
"It's absolutely fantastic news", says Lee Child of LA Performance Services. "It's great to keep the FC Championship alive and to encourage the class."

Lee is looking forward to a closely-contested Championship and the smashing of SCR's track records of 5.486/281.24, held by 2002 Champion John Spuffard. "Spuff is going to be under even more pressure defending his title - the other teams are gunning for him. Gordon Smith is hungry for the Championship, the North Herts team are going to build on their five-second pass, and Smax is due some payback after last year!

"We know that the Funny Cars are hugely popular with the fans, so we'll see you all there in May and August!"

CC stands for Crew Changes.

Friday's news about UK Top Methanol FC racer Doug Ripley's plans for 2003 comes further news, this time of changes within the team.
©Eurodragster.com
Cliff Gould has stepped up to the plate to take over as Crew Chief, and the team welcome two new members Dave (clutch) and Gavin (top end). The bad news is that Ray White and Martin Dust will not be on the CC Racing team in 2003. "Doug and I would like to thank Ray and Martin for all of their work up to now", says Cliff, "and we wish them good luck in their new projects."

Stay tuned for more news from the CC Racing pit.

Blown B and A.
9th February: UK Pro Modified racer Bert Englefield has announced that the B and A Racing '38 Ford Coupe will be toting a blown-alcohol engine in the 2004 season, becoming the first UK Pro Mod to take the blown route. Bert débuted his beautiful Coupe in 2002 after racing a six-second Toyota-bodied car for a number of years.

"Hopefully the move will allow the team to be competitive against the Swedish cars of Patrick Wikström and Fast Freddy Fagerström", says Bert. "We know that we face a steep learning curve, but we are looking forward to the challange. The engine will be a Chrysler Hemi, and we are currently in talks with a top IHRA Pro Mod team about combinations and so no."
©Eurodragster.com
Bert's previous Nitrous-equipped engine, clutch and other parts are currently for sale on our Jeff Bull Race Engines-sponsored
Swap Meet. "If the nitrous engine doesn't sell before Easter we will run it, but we really need to start getting the Hemi stuff together so we need to sell the Nitrous stuff to finance it" says Bert.

If you're looking for a 706 then check out the Swap Meet; either way, stay tuned for more news of B and A Racing's exciting move to blown-alcohol.

Price in lost-for-words shock.
9th February: Track announcer John Price has expressed himself "Stunned" to be awarded with Avon Park International Racers Association's Alan Wigmore Trophy. The announcement of the award to The Voice Of UK Drag Racing was made at the APIRA AGM last Sunday.
©Eurodragster.com
"I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat", said Pricey, who announces at both Santa Pod and Shakespeare County Raceways as well as at shows and exhibitions and in TV coverage. "I am deeply, deeply honoured. To have my name put up there with such greats as Alan Wigmore and Brian Taylor was something I would never have imagined in my wildest dreams. I am very grateful indeed to everyone for this award."

John has just come off a long stint working at the Bike Show at Alexandra Palace, which he tells us went very well. He faces a busy year following the FIA European Championship tour, announcing at Santa Pod and Shakespeare County Raceways, and at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

We are sure that everyone will want to join Sharkman and Tog in congratulating John on his very well-deserved award.

Speedfreaks Ball now booking.
8th February: Advance tickets and pit spaces are now on sale for the second annual Speedfreaks Ball, which takes place at Santa Pod Raceway on 10th-11th May. The Speedfreaks ball is a bike-oriented festival featuring drag bike shoot-outs, exhibition vehicles, bike-only Run What You Brung, custom show with cash prizes, bands, trade stands and a lot more.

Organiser Martin Hill tells us that a lot of this year's features are already arranged. "We have an eight-bike shootout between four Top Fuel Bikes and four Supertwins and a ten-bike Super Street Bike shootout", he says. "Eric Teboul will be there with his rocket bike, Donald Pottier and Arnold Neracher are bringing along the VTT Kamikaze rocket mountain bike which has done 150 miles per hour in the eighth mile, we're looking to book a rocket go-kart, and Michel Kooy is bringing his Jet Quad. Of course the Fireforce Jet Funny Cars will be there, and the usual complement of stunt riders."

The Fuel v Supertwin shoot-out includes Steve Woollatt, Ian King, Roel Koedam, Eric Teboul, Ton Pels and Rob van Geffen, with more names to be announced.
©Eurodragster.com
The track is open for Run What You Brung on both Saturday and Sunday - stay tuned for details of arrangements.

Martin tells us that pit spaces can be booked now, but that they are only available to advance ticket holders. Advance tickets for the weekend are £20 and are available from Santa Pod Raceway on 01234 782828. When you have booked your advance tickets then you can book pit space with Martin Hill at

Svensson robbed.
8th February: A quick look west to the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona where Sweden's Markus Svensson is in the middle of his first event as joint Crew Chief of Mark Whisnant's Chevy Cavalier Pro Stock after a few seasons with George Marnell.

Mark's first qualifying pass put him #3 at 6.839/201.34, but a timing system error robbed the team of what looked like a good pass when an ET of 0.857 was recorded.

You can read more about Markus Svensson's tie-up with the Whisnants on the Svensk Dragracing web site at www.dragracing.se.

You can stay in touch with the Whisnants' and Markus Svensson's progress at Pomona on the Drag Race Central web site at www.dragracecentral.com or on NHRA's official web site at www.nhra.com.

Colour by Curbishley.
8th February: 2002 UK National Super Comp Champion Martin Curbishley has announced that his new business Curbishley Automotive Refinishing is now open. Martin has over thirty one years' experience in the paint and body trade ranging from hands-on, training and ultimately management. Martin has a varied background in the refinishing industry, which includes straightforward custom painting in the 1970s, single seater refinishing in the 1980s, and now focusing on drag racing, and prides himself with keeping up-to-date with all the latest paint technology and techniques.

"We are specialising in a complete refinishing service for the professional team", says Martin. "The premises we have moved into can accommodate forty-foot tractor/trailer units and we feel that we are unique in being able to offer a one-stop paint shop for the professional racer: we can paint the rig, the race car and any associated vehicles and sponsor displays, stands etc. Details of powder coating for chassis and components will follow shortly. We can also accommodate Top Fuel chassis and Funny Car bodies.

"As you know I have worked with Mark Gredzinski in the past and I am sure that Mark will be all too happy to discuss any design requirements that any racer may have.

"At Curbishley Automotive Refinishing I also have a large secure tarmac compound which can accommodate several large rigs, trailers etc. with ease - anybody having difficulty finding secure parking for their rigs or trailers this season can speak to me at the track or give me a call."

Martin tells us that as well as looking after the local dealerships in his area, he has recently completed a '55 Chevy which is destined for Custom Car Street Eliminator and new graphics on Rob Elsom's Super Gas '67 Camaro. Vehicles due in at CAR very shortly are a '59 'Vette again for CCSE and a '67 Camaro for the 'International Man of Mystery' - stay tuned for details about that! A web site is currently being designed which will, with the permission of the owners, have a weekly update of any interesting projects which Martin undertakes.
©Eurodragster.com
As for the 2003 race season, Martin says that he will be competing a full season in both Super Comp and Super Gas, defending the SC1 plate and hoping to topple the Mighty Frank Mason from the SG1 position. The roadster is currently in the workshop to have the chassis painted and components checked. The team will also have the luxury of a spare engine and transmission this season. The old engine is currently being refreshed at Jeff Bull Race Engines, and Jon Webster is refreshing the existing glide and putting together an identical spare. "The new motor should make significantly more power and shouldn't need to work as hard as the old motor, which was originally built for Money Hungry in 1997", says Martin.

"Big thanks, as ever, go to Jeff Bull and Jon Webster and even bigger thank go to the Super Crew - my wife Ruth and Spencer Tramm (who has now been promoted to CEO of Martin Curbishley Racing - top that PMR!) Hope everyone has a safe and successful season - see you at Easter."

APIRA seek member.
8th February: We've had a plea from APIRA Club and Race Secretary Wendy Talbot who is seeking a mystery member. "I am trying to trace a Dave Clarkson", says Wendy. "He sent me a cheque for membership but didn't enclose any contact details. He isn't on my database and on checking with Paula Marshall he is not a member of Santa Pod Racers Club either. I received the cheque three weeks ago, I don't want Dave thinking I've forgotten!"

Careful owner, low mileage...
7th February: UK Top Fuel Dragster racer
Andy Carter has announced the acquisition of Swedish TF racer Pelle Lindelöw's entire Top Fuel Dragster operation. The deal includes the McKinney-built ex-Cory Mac Top Fuel Dragster (right), spares and tools, Volvo tractor unit and purpose-built trailer.

The news has come as a big surprise since Andy had planned to campaign the 2003 season in a Top Fueller owned by Knut Söderquist. "After much thought and careful consideration, we realised that to fully achieve all the goals within the Carter Motorsport camp, our own Top Fuel operation was the only way forward", said Andy Carter. "We are fully committed to the 2003 FIA Championship and to our main sponsors, First National Telecom Services. We believe that we now have the team and the equipment in place to really push back the boundaries within our sport and to do everything we can to take drag racing to new levels."

"We are out there competing in a very difficult arena, in terms of sponsorship and marketing, and we are getting results" said Carter Motorsports PR Dan Welberry. "This does however mean that we are under constant pressure to deliver on so many levels. By having our own outfit, we will be able to honour those commitments as well as offering many new and exciting opportunities for sponsors."
©Eurodragster.com
Pelle Lindelöw is understandably wistful. "It has been our intention for some years to find a new home for the operation", he said. "When this opportunity arose we were happy for a number of reasons. Firstly, because we are letting everything go at once our pain will be lessened. Secondly, we really like the idea of seeing the operation carry on and being able to follow it. It's still 'ours', but at same same time not ours, if you see what I mean. I would like to wish Andy and his team a big Good Luck, may they win the title this year, and if they do I'll grow another inch with the pride!"

"This is fantastic news for European Top Fuel", added Andy Carter. "We would like to thank King Knut for his support, trust and assistance in enabling us to get to this point, and we wish him well for the coming season. Thanks must also go to Terry and Tina Gibbs for their ongoing backing.

"We are looking forward to the car's début and to seeing all of our fans and friends at the Pro Fuel Shootout at the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod Raceway."

You can stay in touch with all of the latest news from Carter Motorsports on the team's official web site at www.andycarter.net.

Ripley: we have a heartbeat.
7th February: UK Top Methanol Funny Car racer Doug Ripley is set to take on all comers in 2003 in his CC Racing Ford Probe. The FC has been treated to a 526 ci engine, a new fuel system, new pistons and rods and other parts to take on the big names not just in MSA British competition but also at three FIA European Championship rounds, two at Santa Pod and one at Hockenheim. The team have also acquired a trailer which previously belonged to Malta's Mr Whippy TMD team.

The final piece of the team's preparations for 2003 fell into place when Doug passed his Stress ECG with flying colours. "No-one that old has passed before!" joked team member Ray White.
©Eurodragster.com
"We're going full-tilt at it", said Team Manager Andy Oliver. "We've had a good spend up so we can run with the big guys. We'll see how she goes - we've certainly now got all the right parts to run low sixes if not better, and we'll certainly try to surprise Doug!"

The plan is to contest four of the five MSA British Drag Racing Championship rounds as well as the FIA Main Event, Nitrolympics and FIA European Finals. "Obviously we'll see how we stand after each race", said Andy, "but that's what we want to do. The car's ready now, I wish we could get out there and race!"

An imminent visitor to the CC Racing workshops is the new Firebird body for the Shockwave Fuel Funny Car, which is to be prepped and painted to a brand new design. Stay tuned for more news on that.

In other news, CC Racing are to be the subject of a feature in the the next issue of Custom Car magazine, and Andy Oliver's Custom Car Street Eliminator Camaro is currently for sale on our Jeff Bull Race Engines-sponsored Swap Meet. "It owes me forty grand, but I'm selling it for fifteen grand!", says Andy. Check out the Cars For Sale section of the Swap Meet if you fancy joining the beautiful people of CCSE.

Editor's note: Thanks to UK National Tech Inspector Geoff Martin for getting in touch to point out a typo in Wednesday's news item about the UK SFI Day. The inspection period for SFI 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 clutches is one year, not two years as originally posted. We have updated the original news item for the record; apologies for the error.

UK National event entry fees.
6th February: Avon Park International Racers Association and Santa Pod Racers Club have agreed changes to the entry fee structure for the UK National Championships. Commencing this season, fees will be on a sliding scale dependent upon the duration of the event and the class contested.

Many thanks to APIRA Club Secretary Wendy Talbot for confirming the new fees, which are as follow:
  Two-day event Three-day event Four-day event
MSA British Top Methanol, MSA British Nitro Funny Car, Pro Mod, ACU Top Fuel Bike £90 £100 £110
All other Car and Bike classes excepting Junior Dragster £75 £85 £95
Junior Dragster £40 £50 £60

Wendy also tells us that ticket allocations per entry are ten for MSA British Top Methanol and MSA British Nitro Funny Car, six for Pro Mod and Top Fuel Bike, and four for all other classes.

The fees for four-day events refer to the extension of the FIA European Finals to four days, which we understand is under consideration from 2004.

The separate arrangements for Pro-class entry fees at FIA and FIM/UEM events continue.

"I am delighted to be able to make this announcement", said Lee Child. "It will be great to have the Top Fuel Bikes there". ACU Championship Co-ordinator Ian King, who races a Top Fuel Bike, was equally happy. "I am very grateful to LA Performance Services", he said. "We are all looking forward to racing again at Shakespeare County Raceway."

Paranoid Racing aim for PSB.
6th February: Greece's Paranoid Racing, Panagiotis Zarifopoulos and Yla Galani, have announced a Feuling W3 dragbike programme which has been under discussion for more than a year. The team's objective for 2003 is to prepare and test a W3 Pro Stock Bike to compete in the FIM/UEM European Drag Bike Championship later in the year and in 2004.

"We decided to run a W3 racebike about a year ago, and we had been talking with the late Jim Feuling and James Di Tullio, as well as negotiating a sponsor package with a major automotive company which also markets "W" configuration engines", says Zman. "After initial approval of the project we were waiting for a final approval of the budget and for Feuling R and D to move to their new premises and free some time off production to be able to develop a race engine which would compete in Competition Bike as a methanol/nitrous bike branded after one of the auto company's car brands. Unfortunately, the project was rejected and Jim Feuling's untimely passing in December brought things to a halt.

"However, having invested a lot of planning and thinking in the project, we decided to go ahead and build a Pro Stock Bike and finance it on our own with the help of our associate sponsors, at least until it is ready and producing results. We have asked the Championship officials to give us a weight break for 2004, and we think that we will have no trouble with the bike's acceptance as Feuling Motor Company is still in very good and competitive hands, and the production of the W3 will continue as planned.

"To gain the necessary knowledge about Pro Stock Bike chassis technology we are acquiring Nick Pepper's Championship-winning GSXR Pro Stock Bike which we plan to race in Greece and maybe a couple of European events this season with a gas/nitrous engine. We are hoping to get our hands on a set of special W3 crankcases by the April AHDRA event in Phoenix and to start working on a frame right away. The three-cylinder engine will be kept at stock 150 ci displacement and use as many stock production parts as possible, as we are confident in the strength of Jim Feuling's outstanding design and construction.

"We are currently modifying our 1974 Airstream trailer and Ford Van to the team's needs, and we expect to be ready for a test pass before this season is over.

"We would like to thank all the people who answered our questions and concerns, and especially the people at Feuling Motor Company for keeping up the good work. We will keep everyone updated with our project, and welcome comments and thoughts by E-Mail at zman@greekracer.net and yla@greekracer.net. A web site is currently being prepared and will be ready soon."

You too can be an FB.
6th February: Europes quickest street-legal Ford-powered car could carry your name in 2003 under FB Racing's FB Associate scheme. This aims to overcome the lack of big sponsors by recruiting many smaller backers and at £25 is within the reach of most.

All members of the scheme receive regular (we can attest to that - Ed) E-Mail updates of all the effort which goes into building, maintaining and campaigning the UK's first eight-second street rod, with insider information and photographs not published on the teams web site. In addition members will also receive an exclusive welcome gift on signing up plus their name on the FB Racing web site. "Perhaps most important of all youll be helping to get the FB Racing 34 Ford Coupe deep in to the eights", says driver Ian Hook.

As well as individuals, businesses, web sites and clubs are also welcome to subscribe, and receipts are provided if required. Five spaces are left on the car for the 2003 season, so if you would like to join up then check out the pledge form, which you can find on the FB Racing web site at www.fbracing.co.uk/associates_form.htm.

E-Mail update.
6th February: If you were tuned in last week you will remember that we expressed concern over our mail server dropping E-Mails. We are still not convinced that everything is OK and we are currently at our persuasive best talking to our ISP about the apparent problem.

In the meantime, we are currently up-to-date with the news we have received so if you have sent news to Eurodragster in the last week and it has not been published, then it is not because we don't consider it newsworthy but because we did not receive it.

So if you have sent news and we have not published it, or if you have written or replied to Sharkman, Tog or the Eurodragster webmaster address and not received an acknowledgement, then please re-send your mail to togsdragracing@btinternet.com and we will deal with it as soon as we can.

Not a Canary, still Hairy.
5th February: UK Super Street racer Perry Antoniou has been in touch with the latest news of his good friend Keith Ridley's return to racing. "I must only assume that Keith is changing for the better...or is becoming as bad as my wife when it comes to shopping", says Perry. "We spent last weekend shopping for race car parts and Keith has really gone to town. There were no 'Mr Byrite' parts in the boxes we were collecting, as I was expecting, and I can assure you that his new racecar will be the 'Versace' model! Or is he becoming a woman?"
©Eurodragster.com
Keith is now the proud owner of Michelle Higgins' Hairy Canary Ford Escort which ran in Pro ET, but one of the first things he has done is to remove the canary associations from the car. "Keith spent twelve hours compounding the name and the picture of Tweety off the car", says Perry. "We told him to leave the word 'hairy' as we don't think that Keith has cut his hair for a few months now!"

Keith's shopping list has included Billy McDermid's Super Gas Big Block and Stuart Peck's TH400 box, and he has been rummaging around Perry's workshop looking for spare Nitrous parts. The Escort is booked into Webster Race Engineering to bring the chassis up to tech. Perry tells us that it is as yet undecided which class Keith will be contesting, but that it will be a Super class. Stay tuned to discover the class, and whether the car remains Hairy.

Jacobsen returns to Top Fuel.
4th February: Courtesy of our good friends at Svensk Dragracing comes the news that Norway's Øyvor Jcobsen is to return to the seat of a Top Fuel Dragster after a ten-year absence from the sport. Øyvor has teamed up with former rival Rune Fjeld and aims to contest the entire FIA Tour in a car imported from the USA at the end of last year.

Øyvor started her career on two wheels but moved to Top Fuel Dragster, where she quickly became a force to be reckoned with. She raced with the innovative McGee engine before retiring (temporarily as it turned out) in 1992.

Øyvor plans to renew her licence at the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod Raceway in April and then has every intention of making big noises in FIA Top Fuel.

Hogarth completes paint shop.
4th February: UK Super Modified racer, race car builder and painter Jon Hogarth has announced that his new purpose-built paint shop is complete. Jon, whose own Corvette is a fitting rolling advertisement for his company Specialist In Design, is now able to offer the the all-new Rage Extreme paint colours and effects, as well as House of Kolor.

"Our workshop is full to bursting", says Jon's wife Sharon. "The Gibbs' Obsession Super Modified chassis is well underway and starting to take shape. The chassis for a new Pro Stock-style S10 pick-up for Shelly and Dave Higgins is nearing completion, and there appears to be a hint of Girl Power in the air, as well as Shelly's new pick-up for Super Comp we have recently completed work for another lady driver, who is looking to test for Custom Car Street Eliminator. She may not be new to the sport but will certainly be new to the driving seat. Super Street Bike racer Graham Dance has been down to discuss his plans, and the paint shop doors are open and shut more times than a till at Sainsbury's on a Saturday afternoon!"
©Eurodragster.com
Jon and Sharon are also fitting in work on their own race car. "We have plans for a new look for the Corvette for 2003, as well as a new engine combination, so we will need to be blowing the cob webs out of it soon", says Sharon.

For more details about the race car building and painting services which Specialist In Design can offer, call Jon and Sharon on 01493 651198.

Outlaws aim for National status.
3rd February: Following yesterday's news that Super Modified is to be contested as a UK National Championship class, it has been announced that the Supercharged Outlaw racers are to follow the same process as the Super Mod racers with a view to having their class contested as a National Championship.

"We aim to have our rules and regulations agreed by the UK Tech Committee", says Roy Wilding of Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars. "For example, getting the cars tagged will be no problem, the racers have either done it or are prepared to do it. If we get Tech Committee approval then we plan to put on demonstrations for promoters, and then hopefully the Clubs will take us on board. We realise that it is not going to happen overnight, but we want to do it right and follow due process in exactly the same manner as the Super Mod racers have done - hopefully with the same positive outcome."
©Eurodragster.com
There are some twenty eight Supercharged Outlaw racers in the UK, running to three indexes: 8.50, 7.50 and unlimited, with machines as diverse as Neil Townson's blown-alcohol altered and Johnny 'Mental' Hall's wheelstanding slingshot dragster. "There is definitely a gap in the market for old-time supercharged action", says Roy Wilding. "The fans love it. We're not asking for any big deals, we just want to put on old-style heads-up racing."

To this end all Supercharged Outlaw racers and interested parties are invited to a meeting at 12:00 midday next Sunday, 9th February, at the Fountain pub in Union Street, Oldbury.

APIRA Perpetual Awards presented.
3rd February: Two of the Avon Park International Racers Association's Perpetual Awards were announced at yesterday's Annual General Meeting at Crick in Northamptonshire. The prestigious memorial awards were awarded to three long-standing servants of the sport.

The Alan Wigmore Memorial Trophy is named for the late racer, track announcer and club official and is awarded for enthusiasm and dedication. The Trophy was awarded to the voice of UK drag racing, Shakespeare County Raceway and Santa Pod Raceway track announcer John Price. John was not present and so Eurodragster staffer Sharkman accepted the award on his behalf.

The Anya Yates Memorial Trophy is named for the late APIRA track official and is awarded for dedication and achievement. This Trophy was awarded to Terry and Tina Gibbs of Obsession Motorsport in recognition of years of racing followed by five years of promotion of the Super Series events at Shakespeare County Raceway. Tina Gibbs accepted the trophy on behalf of herself and Terry, who is now home and, we are pleased to report, recovering well from recent major heart surgery.

Congratulations to John, Terry and Tina.

Fuel Harley finds new home.
3rd February: Back on 25th January Ian Turburville alerted us to the fact that Steve Clutterbuck's Fuel Harley was for sale at a very reasonable price. Turbo now tells us that the bike has found a buyer.

"The Harley has been sold to UK Supertwin racer Chris Stebbings, so will feature in the National Association of Supertwins championship this year", says Turbo. "Chris has raced his beautiful red Sportster in the Street class for the past couple of years and feels ready to step up to Fuel now. The bike was such a bargain - it was cheaper than building a new motor for the Street bike. We wish him luck and welcome him to the 'Nitro Mafia'!"

2002 UK Super Comp review.
3rd February: We are indebted to Paul Marston for sending a review of the 2002 UK National Super Comp Championship and the 2003 prospects:

Well, we have a new name holding the coveted #1 plate for the 2003 season, with every indication that the team will be defending the title just as aggressively as they fought for it in 2002. Martin Curbishley along with his wife Ruth and top crewman Spencer Tramm were the class of the field. They won in textbook fashion, earning the dominance they promised by being out with the new mount at the 2001 Flame and Thunder Show and the beginning of the 2002 season testing at the RWYB test and tune days, setting up their newly-built combination. With the ex-Jon Webster Championship-winning rolling chassis, Martin then consulted the premier Super Class engine builder Jeff Bull Racing Engines, to assemble him a combination that included the popular option of running an alcohol carb fuel system instead of relatively expensive and hotter-running race gas. This also allowed Martin and his team to run in Super Gas as well as Super Comp, a wise move indeed as the extra track time under National Event conditions allowed by running two classes undoubtedly contributed to their success. It equated to racking up twenty plus passes at Easter, enough to iron out any remaining new set-up problems at the first event. With the cost implications of all that extra fuel to be paid for negated by using alcohol, which is a fraction of the cost of race gas. With this combination and all the pre-season testing, Martin Curbishley Racing hit the ground running at the first event. They even surprised themselves, as Martin found the Brogie Roadster so easy to drive, once he was used to the unique seating and control layout and all that seat time left him quite comfortable in his new ride, giving very good repeatability which enabled him to qualify very well in both Super Gas and Super Comp. This form was continued throughout the season, becoming a main contender for the crowns of both Super Gas and Super Comp. When the season ended and the dust settled, Martin Curbishley Racing was Super Comp Champion in both the National standings and the Super Series, and runner-up in the SPRC Championship. In Super Gas the results were nearly as impressive with runner-up in the National points standings and winning the Santa Pod championship and finishing third in the Super Series.

Brian Pateman had another deadly consistent year, culminating in a victory at the European Doorslammers Top Sportsman class, the richest race of the season. He also made a successful trip to Hockenheim. With the very welcome return after illness of his most colourful Crew Chief Lenny, the Quarter Master team is looking forward to the 2003 season, with plenty of options to consider. Brian again lifted the SPRC trophy, finishing top of the pile for the second year in succession. It will be interesting to see what these guys elect to run in 2003, they must be considered smart money.

Dave and Sarah Day had a tough 2002 season, making good progress with their sometimes-errant mount. They share driving duties and swap classes, running Super Comp and Super Gas at the Santa Pod and Shakespeare County. Dave took Super Gas laurels at the Summernationals at Santa Pod this year. Jon Webster was consulted during Summer testing to cure the erratic handling characteristics occasionally displayed by their beautiful '32 Ford roadster. Team Double Trouble had a solid year of dealing with the issues at hand and most importantly having a good time and enjoying their racing. They enjoyed the crewing skills of the Belmont Racing boys who may well be back out for 2003 themselves. Team Double Trouble will be back hungry for more success in 2003.

George Chiarella had a great 2002 season, his beautiful and colourful Ford Coupe is one of the most outrageous race cars currently in Super Comp. George and the Straight to the Point crew have really made good headway during the 2002 season and should be justifiably proud of this. With an unusual - for Super Comp - combination of a Lenco-equipped supercharged Small Block Chevy, they have now enjoyed richly deserved success through hard work and determination, for which everyone in the class congratulates them. The end of the season saw a strong finish from George and the boys, going rounds and in the process beating probably everyone at least once. An undefeated finish at the European Finals and running way under the index at the European Doorslammers with an 8.60 at a slow terminal of 140 mph indicates that there was more where that came from. Straight to the Point have their stuff well and truly sorted, well done and let's have more for 2003.

Paul Knight had a very good season despite being handicapped with a motor which no matter what Paul and the team did refused point blank to run an eight-second pass, but in consolation was the picture of reliability. That can only be attributed to the faultless performance of the crew and driver. Paul picked his moments, but was there to capitalise on any mistakes made by fellow competitors with ruthless efficiency. Considering the performance deficit Paul Knights team did a lot better than was expected of them according to the form book. Not prepared to sit back, the 2002 season saw the team try everything to coax an eight out of the potent Pontiac Trans Am. Before the season was out Paul already had plans to replace the motor and as far as I know it is sold, we await news on its replacement. With an injection of more power this is one team which will be a tough one to come up against in 2003.

Shaun Lathan had his finest kind of season, one full of good times, Shaun and the boys really enjoy their racing but come race day he is one tough customer. Shaun had a good year with the motor but lunched the axle at the Summernationals at Shakespeare County. A measure of how good a team is how long it takes to repair, well Shaun was back for the following weekend, the European Finals at Santa Pod, thats class! We hope to see Shaun and the boys back out for 2003 with hopefully some more power, which is all the team needs to be at the front of the hunt.

Zane Llewellyn and the Bootsoop Dragster have been on their holidays again, stopping off in a good few Scandinavian countries, Holland and Germany in the process. Our most travelled Super Comp team now competes when the European schedule allows. This year was favourable and saw Zane at a number of UK events here on our shores. With his skills honed racing the very best Europe has to offer there is plenty to learn from racing this team. Taking every advantage available Zane runs a big-blocked dragster, considered by most to be the weapon of choice in Super Comp. A very tough customer who can teach you a lot merely by racing him. We need more Zanes to be such good ambassadors for drag racing throughout Europe as when Bootsoop is away racing in Europe it is very much their gain and our loss. Let's hope that the 2003 calendar allows Zane to race in England often.

Tim Adam and the TART Racing team were reigning 2001 champions but instead of defending his title Tim and the team elected to compete in Europe as well as part of the English fixtures. A brave move and whether intentionally as a consequence or not we saw a lot more European Super-class competitors than before visit us at the European Finals. I would say it is fair to assume that Tim and his team played a small part in this very welcome friendly invasion, showing the European teams that the toughest competitors need to win here in England before they can consider themselves to be class of the field. Tim has always been a good ambassador for Super-class racing, once again they had a good season regularly going rounds as well as success on their European tour, in particular in Drachten, Holland. Super Comp simply would not be the same without veteran racers like Tim Adam and the TART Racing Team. We want to see Tim and the team regularly competing in the UK Championship, we will have to wait and see what 2003 brings.

Paul Marston and Paul Marston Racing had a good season with the ChryslerCard PT Bruiser, building on what they learned with this race car in its first year in 2001. The 2002 season saw the team fulfil all of their sponsorship commitments with the ChryslerCard PT Bruiser; this amounted to twenty two events, running the race car at sixteen of those. To do this they had to enjoy good reliability, the appointment of some key personnel during the season insured this, they finished very strongly indeed with an NPB 8.08/167 at the Doorslammers. With such a heavy sponsorship commitment it could be argued that at some points it took their focus off of Super Comp, leading to some inconsistent performances. The 2003 season looks to be even busier than 2002 if that is possible, but with other projects that the team have involved themselves in, it will be interesting to hear their plans. As far as 2003 and Super Comp goes all we can say is: no announcements to the contrary as yet.

Mark Flavell had another good season with his big block-powered dragster, enjoying some richly deserved success including at least one National event in 2002. Mark's team are veterans of drag racing and have the respect of all of the teams currently competing. Their friendly nature and willingness to help others with advice and spares is a real asset to them and to Super Comp. Some good reliability was seen with the dragster, all in all they were seen to have a good season, just reward for all the hard work that was put in to make it look so easy.

Mark Fairhurst was another dragster pilot who had a trouble-free season, enjoying his racing which included at least #1 qualifier. Mark's dragster is always immaculately turned-out and is one of the most professional-looking dragsters currently competing in any class. Commissioned by Mark himself, it is yet another great example of Hauser Racing workmanship, as well as demonstrating their abilities to produce a competitive race car, just what the customer ordered! Mark Fairhurst racing should be out again for the 2003 season.

Malcolm Francis is a new name to Super Comp but shows every sign of competing full-time for the 2003 season with the ex-Gordon Appleton Camaro. The comprehensive refurbishment has resulted in a first-class race car which is a credit to him and his team. With the eight-second barrier cracked at the Doorslammers, 2003 could see another hungry racer enter the fray.

With so many other new and old teams expected for the 2003 season, Super Comp should see a healthy increase in numbers for the 2003 season, so watch this space. Everyone in Super Comp would like to sincerely thank all of our individual and class sponsors for their help over the 2002 season, and are all looking forward to an even more exciting 2003 season of National Championship drag racing.

Leanders' plastic surgery success.
2nd February: Sweden's Leanders Brothers Racing Top Methanol Funny Car team could be forgiven for thinking that they were cursed in 2002. The season started in style as the team pulled off quite a coup by acquiring an ex-John Force body, but then saw their luck nosedive as the body and chassis - but thankfully not driver Ulf Leanders - were damaged in a high-speed impact with a battery on the track at Gardermoen in August and then one entire rear quarter of the repaired body was blown away after a rear slick exploded at over 230 mph at the FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway.

We were very pleased to hear from Ulf that the body has been repaired by a bodywork wizard and that the team's preparations for 2003 are now in full swing with a new chassis, rear end, blower and engine also on the shopping list.

"We have had the Ford body repaired by the excellent plastic surgeon Hans Kadi in Hudiksvall, and you can see the results on the picture (right - click on picture for full-sized version)", says Ulf Leanders. "Hans has worked with epoxy and polyester part time for many years, and has even built his own Opel Omega and Citroen Funny Car bodies. He also makes and sells beautiful one-piece fibreglass Junior Dragster bodies.

"The body is now perfectly OK for racing again, but will need some work before it has a new paint job. We are also changing the colour this year; I will get back to you with details on that, and why, later."
©Eurodragster.com
The team have also acquired a brand new Pleuger chassis, and have a new 10.5-inch Strange rear end to fit. "We have also invested in a new PSI Blower, and the plan is is to have a new engine before the season starts and to have the old one as a spare", says Ulf.

Ulf sent two more pictures of the repaired FC body so that you can see what an excellent job Hans Kadi has done:

Super Modified goes National...
2nd February: The Super Modified Racers Association have announced that Super Mod has been fully adopted into the MSA White Book and will now be contested as one of the UK National Championship classes.

"It has always been understood, and indeed clearly indicated at the very outset, that a 'bedding-in' period would be vital for the Class before committing the Super Mod rulebook to the scrutiny of the MSA and the Drag Racing Tech Committee", says SMRA Secretary and Championship Co-ordinator Sharon Hogarth. "The aim is to introduce differing combinations, each with an opportunity to compete heads-up on a level playing field. Without running specific combinations against each other in a heads-up environment, the relative competitiveness was nothing more than calculated speculation until racers were able to get out there and prove them in competition.
©Eurodragster.com
"I'm sure that Super Mod fans and fellow racers will agree that great progress was achieved over the 2002 season with respect to increased performance from many of the individual teams running both Nitrous and normally aspirated, and the various combinations required some minor re-balancing to ensure continued close competition and sustainability. With those changes now unanimously agreed and firmly in the White Book, the Super Modified show is on the road. Super Mod 2003 - get ready to rumble!"

Super Modified will be contested at the following events in 2003:

19th-21st April: Easter Thunderball, Santa Pod Raceway
3rd-5th May: Excitement Nationals, Shakespeare County Raceway
14th-15th June: Power Nationals, Shakespeare County Raceway
28th-29th June: SPRC Summernationals, Santa Pod Raceway
23rd-25th August: All-Star Nationals, Shakespeare County Raceway
27th-28th September: UK National Finals, Santa Pod Raceway

There may be a seventh round subject to the agreement of the racers; we will of course bring you news of that as soon as we receive it. You can stay in touch with all the latest from Super Mod on the class' official web site at www.eurodragster.com/supermod.

...as Super Mod Association formed.
2nd February: Racers, sponsors and fans of Super Modified in the UK now have an Association to represent their interests and to keep them informed of developments. SCR set to be Stormed.
2nd February: Back on Monday we brought you the news that Roger Goring and the Firestorm Jet Funny Car team were off to the Isle of Man in July to appear at the Jurby Sprint. Last night we received another call from a very happy Roger.

"I'm delighted to announce that Lee Child of LA Performance Services has confirmed five dates with us at Shakespeare County Raceway this season", said Roger. "We are honoured that Lee has chosen us to support his events in 2003, and we are going to do our very best to put on a Storming show! Things really started to come together again for us the last time we were at Shakespeare County Raceway, the 2002 Doorslammer Internationals, and we can't wait to get back out there and carry on where we left off."

Roger has put in best passes so far at SCR of 6.4 and 250 mph in the J85-engined, Firebird-bodied machine which is one of only three Jet FCs on the planet with the revolutionary centre-drive design.

"We know that Roger is very popular with the fans, and the Funny Car and the team are always very well turned out", said Lee Child. "It will be great to have him at the Ultimate Power series, the European Doorslammer Nationals and the Halloween Showdown."

Roger, Firestorm and his crew of Ian Blaylock and Helen Rusling will be appearing at the following LA Performance Services events at Shakespeare County Raceway:

3rd-5th May: Excitement Nationals
14th-15th June: Power Nationals
23rd-25th August: Allstar Nationals
20th-21st September: European Doorslammer Nationals
18th-19th October: Halloween Showdown

Roger also said that Firestorm has just been booked for a bike event at North Weald in July as well as at least two dates at York Dragway. You will be able to stay up-to-date with all the news and dates from the Firestorm pit on the team's official web site at www.firestorm-jfc.co.uk.

Turbo on new shirts.
2nd February: Bike photo-journalist, designer and racer Ian 'Turbo' Turburville has been in touch with news of the latest drag racing apparel. First up is Supertwin racer Ronny Aasen who has a new sweatshirt on sale:

"Looks like it's going to be a good year for our European friends as several have decided to enter more events in the UK this year", says Turbo. "One such racer is the rising star of the Supertwin ranks, Ronny Aasen, from Norway. To help offset the enormous costs of all this travelling and throttle twisting Ronny has comissioned a really nice, top quality, black sweatshirt to sell at the track and through our website. It features a great bit of artwork (right) depicting Ronny on his PRP monster on the front, the Supertwin logo down each sleeve and this main sponsor 'Custom Bike Parts' on the back. They are just £29.99 each and every buyer gets given a number. At the end of the year the numbers get drawn from a helmet and the winner gets two free tickets to the FIM Finals at Santa Pod!"

Turbo himself has shirts on offer, the Turboville range of pit shirts which will be available by Easter.

Turbo's pit shirts are available in eight colours and a full range of adult and children's sizes (right, click on picture for larger version). They come in 100% ringspun cotton and can be customised to teams' requirements.

For more details check out Turbo's web site at www.turboville.com or drop Turbo an E-Mail at i.turboville@ntlworld.com.

FIA TF hose test requirements.
1st February: FIA European Championship Co-ordinator Kjell Pettersson has kindly been in touch to pass on FIA Commission Chairman Carl Olsen's details of hydrostatic testing requirements for fuel and oil hoses, which are outlined in the 2003 NHRA and FIA Top Fuel Dragster rules. A memo prepared by NHRA's Technical Department reads:

"Hydrostatic testing is common practice in most labs, and is self explanatory by name. Hoses must be made to fit the application for which theyre intended, and then taken to a certified test facility. All hoses must be pressure tested by means of hydrostatic testing for a minimum of 30 seconds. This means the lines must be filled with water, and pressurized to 750 psi (51.8 bars) for high pressure lines, or 300 psi (20.7 bars) for low pressure lines.

"While the hoses are being tested, there should be no indication of separation, weeping, leaking, etc. Obviously, if any of these conditions exist, the hose will fail, and testing will commence on the next hose.

"If the hose passes the test, a label that is impervious to nitromethane and brake cleaning fluid will need to be placed on the hose stating the date, pressure tested to, and testers name."

"We have also determined that there is a certified testing facility located in close proximity to Santa Pod Raceway", adds Carl Olson. "The contact information for this facility is:

Pete Woolford, QC/Workshop Manager
Earl's Performance Products
Unit 17
Silverstone Circuit
Silverstone
Northamptonshire
NN12 8TL
England

Phone: 01327 858221 (outside the UK +44 1327 858221)

E-Mail:

I am certain that there are many other similar facilities located throughout Europe."

If you are a certified testing facility in Europe then please E-Mail your details to news@eurodragster.com and we'll publish them here.

Malin returns again.
1st February: UK Super Pro ET racer Gary Malin is to return to the track in 2003, after a very trying 2002 in which he suffered two top-end crashes including a two-car collision at Shakespeare County Raceway in August.

"Gaz is now back to his normal self", says his wife Lin. "It seems that being shaken and stirred has not deterred him from his passion. With a little - well, maybe a lot - of nagging from me, and with the withdrawal symptoms now kicking in, Gaz has been busy researching a new project, and I am proud and happy to let you know that he is indeed coming back!

"We have put the wheels in motion (excuse the pun). Jon Webster and his team will be building the chassis, and the engine will be built by Jeff Bull, what a great combo!
©Eurodragster.com
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported both of us over these last months, especially our friends, without whom we would not have wanted to carry on. It's like I said: you can take the man out of drag racing, but you can never take the drag racing out of the man!"

Stay tuned for more news on Gary Malin's new race car.

NGK plug Carter gap.
1st February: UK Top Fuel Dragster racer Andy Carter has announced another sponsorship deal, this time with NGK Spark Plugs. NGK Spark Plugs are widely used across all forms of motorsport including Formula 1, Touring Cars, Rallying and Motorcycle Racing.

"We are delighted to welcome NGK on board for 2003", says Carter Motorsports PR Dan Welberry. "There has been a long-standing relationship between the two parties and we are really looking forward to developing this further throughout the year. NGK products have an outstanding reputation in motorsport which is why their spark plugs have always been Andy's first choice!"

NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd was established in 1975 and is now located in new purpose-built premises in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Within the company there are two main divisions: NGK Spark Plugs, responsible for spark plugs and related products, and NTK Technical Ceramics responsible for semi-conductors, electronic components, ceramic cutting tools and fine ceramics. They have established a world-leading reputation for quality and innovation in all of their product areas and are committed to maintaining this excellence. The high compression ratios and engine speeds developed in high-performance racing engines require spark plugs, which can withstand overheating and mechanical shock: NGK has a range of plug types capable of withstanding these severe conditions, many using precious metals such as platinum or gold-palladium. You can find out more on NGK's web site at www.ngkntk.co.uk.

Champion Harris turns promoter.
1st February: 2002 NAST Supertwin Street Champion Les Harris is organising a racing show in March. The popular 'Beardy Bloke' has lined up an impressive display of drag racing machinery for Race Rock at the King Edward VII pub in Norwich on Sunday 23rd March, but he tells us that he has room for more if anyone else would like to appear.

"Two Top Fuel Bikes will be there as long as they are back in one piece in time!", Les told Eurodragster on Wednesday. "Bob Brooks will have his Competition Bike there, my own Black Racer, George Laycock and all of my Supertwin colleagues will be bringing their bikes along - they're all up for it. There are 9.90 Bikes, 10.90 Bikes, hopefully some vintage drag bikes and also a Funny Car which I've been told is stored in a barn up the road from here. If half the people who have promised to come along turn up then it's going to be a show and a half - like a static drag race. Norwich needs a show like this!"

As well as the drag racing machinery there are road race bikes, carts and mopeds. Les has also lined up live bands in the afternoon and evening, trade stands including a Black Bear Harley Davidson stand and his and wife Lyn's own stall with jewellery and photographs. There is also a raffle at £1 a ticket with a huge list of prizes headlined by a Mini Moto in Ducati livery together with socket sets, tools, T-Shirts, Black Bear Harley Davidson merchandise, pictures from Ian 'Turbo' Turburville and Eurodragster, merchandise from Daytona Bike Week and more. "The raffle's doing nicely!", said Les. There is also a contest to guess the weight of Les' Harley.

Les is determined to make the event a family affair and has arranged a bouncy castle and childrens' entertainers. "I want to involve families and people who don't usually see all this stuff", he said, "although one thing I really want and don't have right now is a clown so if anyone can goof around and entertain kids then get in touch."

Race Rock has already been mentioned in Back Street Heroes magazine, and Bikesport News will be covering the event. Les has also put up posters everywhere and has a cunning plan to mobilise all of the local media as the date approaches. "I've helped with shows before but this is the first one I've ever run myself, I didn't realise how much work there was!", he said. "Luckily Lou, the landlady at the pub, has been a real diamond. The support from Lou and all of the people in the pub has been phenomenal. They all follow my racing and so many of them have offered to help, I am overwhelmed."
©Eurodragster.com
Les would be very pleased to hear from any racer who would like to bring their vehicle along, or from anyone who would like to contribute to the raffle or help in any other way. "If anyone has a nice piece of kit and wants to come, then call me on 01603 412798", he says.

Race Rock takes place on Sunday 23rd March at the King Edward VII pub, which is just north of Norwich city centre at 63 Aylsham Road (the A140, click here for a map). The show is open from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. Entry is a mere £1 which includes free entry to the contest to guess the weight of Les' Harley.

Stay tuned for more news about Race Rock as the date approaches.

PMR pupils to race.
1st February: Paul Marston Racing have announced that two of their School race cars are to participate in the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod Raceway with drivers who plan to licence and then compete at the event under PMR's Driver Tuition scheme.

"The drivers will be receiving the full technical support of Paul Marston Racing", says Paul Marston. "They are not there just to make up numbers - we want them to go rounds. The drivers will have our crew to prepare the race cars, our Crew Chiefs to guide them and to make the tactical calls based on their experience. Its a fantastic opportunity for everyone."

This is an ambitious plan, but Paul says that he and his team have got where they are today by taking the bull by the horns. "This is the best way we can teach our new drivers to be afraid of no-one", he says. "Win or lose, all we will ask is that they do their best, that is all that matters. Whatever happens on elimination day, neither driver will ever forget it, and thats what makes life so good in drag racing."

Paul is quick to give the credit of the Driver Tuition scheme to his backers Chrysler UK Ltd, ChryslerCard, 76 Racing Fuels and Oils, Mac Tools, ATI Performance Transmissions, Disco Equipment Hire, Black Box London Limited, Jeep Club, and in particular Santa Pod Raceway for their co-operation, advice and help.
©Eurodragster.com
Paul has also revealed that a number of dates are still available for both the Driving Tuition and the Passenger Ride Experience. "The dates will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis", he says, "although there are not many left. We will advise when 2003 is full and the 2004 bookings diary is opened". All of the dates are at Santa Pod Raceway and are as follows:
  • Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May (The Big Bang)
  • Saturday 17th May (Test Day)
  • Friday 18th and Saturday 19th July (Bug Jam)
  • Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July (Mopar Euronationals)
  • Saturday 30th August (Test Day)
"We really must thank everyone at Eurodragster (you're welcome - Ed) and all other media sites, publications and magazines for all their help in supporting us with this venture", adds Paul. You can read more including booking details on the Paul Marston Racing web site at www.paulmarstonracing.co.uk.
